BLOOMSBURG—
Tony Donofry (Newtown, Council Rock North) went 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and two RBI and
Vinny Voorhees (Lakaska, New Hope Solebury) had a complete game 10-strikeout performance in the nightcap as Bloomsburg University split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East doubleheader with Mansfield on Friday, falling 10-8 in eight innings in the opener before winning 14-4 in game two.
In game one, the Mountaineers struck first, getting two runs in the top of the first with RBI singles from Kevin Miller and Chris Coleman. The Huskies took the lead in their half of the second when
Eric Ebert (Holland/Council Rock South ) scored on a single off the bat of
Chris Tressler (Lewistown, Lewistown). Tressler then promptly stole second, as the throw allowed
Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg, Mechanicsburg Area) to score from third. Tressler took off again, this time scoring from second on a ground out by
Devin McLaughlin (Bloomsburg, Bloomsburg) before Mansfield retired the side.
The Mountaineers tied the score up in the third, then took a 6-3 lead with three more runs on three hits in the fifth. Bloomsburg came right back in the bottom half, getting a huge inning with five runs on five hits, including a two-run single from
Corey Eisenhart (Dover, Dover). Mansfield rallied in the seventh, getting a pinch-hit RBI single from Brian Danner with two outs to tie the score at eight apiece. The Huskies threatened in the bottom half, but were unable to get any runs in after getting two runners on.
The Mountaineers wasted little time in extra innings, getting a two-run pinch-hit homerun from Dan Lough to take a 10-8 lead before Joel Worthington pitched a scoreless half-inning, picking up the save.
Grant Kernaghan (Upper Darby, Upper Darby) started on the mound for the Huskies striking out eight in 6.2 innings of work and giving up four earned runs. Tressler led the offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
After allowing two runs to the Mountaineers in the top of the first, the Huskies went into attack mode, scoring three in the first, two in the second and three more in the third to take an 8-2 lead. Bloomsburg collected nine hits in the first three innings, including four doubles, with two coming from
Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg, Mifflinburg Area).
The Huskies had a big fifth inning, adding on six more runs on five hits, including an RBI triple by Donofry, to open up their lead to 14-2. Mansfield would tack on two more runs in the top of the seventh to cut its deficit to 10 runs. Voorhees settled down after a rough first, giving up just four hits and fanning nine over his final six innings of work, picking up the win.
Along with Donofry's big performance,
Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg, Central Columbia) went 3-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored and Lloyd went 3-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg, Blue Mountain) added two hits and three RBI.
The Huskies (11-23, 7-11) will travel to Mansfield tomorrow to finish up their weekend series with the Mountaineers. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
