BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University women's soccer team will face California, Pa. University in the quarterfinals of the PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) playoffs on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. at Cal.
The Huskies, under first year head coach Paul Huckett, are 10-7-1 on the year and finished 7-6-1 in PSAC action to earn the eight seed. California, 15-0-2, earned the top seed for the tournament by going 12-0-2 in PSAC play during the regular season.
The winner of the quarterfinal matchup will go on to face either #5 seed IUP or #4 seed Edinboro on Friday in the PSAC semi-finals at a time and site to be announced.
During the regular season the Vulcans had to go to double overtime to beat the Huskies losing 2-1. Bloomsburg had taken a 1-0 lead in that game on a goal by
Natalie Adams (Wilkes-Barre/Holy Redeemer) from
Tara Huber (Orefield/Parkland). Cal, though, responded with a late first half goal and then eventually scored the game-winner in overtime.
"Our game against California earlier in the season proved we can compete with the best,” Huckett said. “Tuesday's game should be a real spectacle and let the best team win.”
For the season BU is led by senior
Katie Walczuk (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) ,who leads the Huskies, in scoring with nine goals and one assist for 19 points. The 2010 All-American now has 27 career goals, eighth best in school history. Huber is second with six goals and four assists for 16 points, while Adams finished the regular season third in goals with three and had three assists for nine points.
In goal senior
Frances Nicoletti (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) has been outstanding all season. She has played over 1,650 minutes and has allowed just 19 goals, while making 83 saves and posting a goals against average of 1.03. Nicoletti has earned seven shutouts on the year.
Huckett, a former assistant with the Bloomsburg men's program, is thrilled that his team has earned a playoff spot.
“The team has worked extremely hard all season and has stayed united through some tough times,” said Huckett. “At times this year we have played some outstanding soccer and it has been a real pleasure to watch. I hope we can continue our good form into tomorrow's game.”
Earning a spot in the PSAC playoffs is something Huckett says was a total team effort.
“It is a great honor to lead this team into the PSAC playoffs in my first year as head coach. However, all the credit goes to the players. Soccer is a players game and good coaches simply facilitate their learning.”
California, ranked fourth in Division II, has been a dominant offensive team all season scoring 61 goals to just six for its opponents.
Carley Work leads the Vulcans in scoring with 16 goals and four assists for 36 points, while Breanna Robinson has 15 goals and four assists for 34 points. In goal Paula Jackson has a goals against average of 0.38 allowing six goals in 1,328 minutes. She also has posted seven solo shutouts, while the team has totaled 12 overall.
In its history Bloomsburg has won three PSAC titles, 1996, 1998 and 2002.
