SLIPPERY ROCK—The Bloomsburg University women's cross country team, led by All-Region performer Vicki Davis (New Ringgold/Schuylkill Haven), finished third at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships on Saturday at Slippery Rock University. Davis took fourth place overall in the race running 22:01 on the 6k course to earn the All-Region honor. Just missing by one place an All-Region honor was Lauren Lehman (Mt. Holly Springs/Boiling Springs) who took 26th in 23:27, while Katie Filemyr (Willow Grove/Bishop McDevitt) was 27th in 23:29.

Bloomsburg's fourth place finisher of the day was Katie McShauy who was 29th in the field in a time of 23:33. Fifth for the Huskies was Samantha Matthews (Windsor/Glenelg) in 24:12 and taking 48th, while Kelsey Harm (Boothwyn/Cardinal O'Hara) was 51st in 24:17 with Martina Drew (Langhorne/Neshaminy) 88th in 25:20.

"I am extremely proud and happy for our women," said head coach Bernie Empie. "The season started off slowly with the time off for the flood. The team could have easily used those two weeks of missed training as an excuse to write off any possibility for team success. Instead, they used it as motivation to keep working hard and understand our time would arrive when it counted most (PSAC's and NCAA Regionals).

As a team the Huskies finished with 134 points with Shippensburg winning the team competition with 50 points. Lock Haven was second with 108 points.

This will the Huskies third trip to the NCAA Championships as a team and the second under head coach Bernie Empie. In 2007 the Huskies took 15th as a team and were 17th in 2009.

"Vicki (Davis) has been solid all year and I suspected she was a top five runner from early on," Empie continued. "Our 2-7 runners are very tightly grouped and on any given day they can finish in a different order. That really helps knowing your teammates have your back. I am really hoping this team can improve on our 17th place finish at NCAA's two years ago."

The NCAA Division II National Championships will be held on Nov. 19 in Spokane, Washington.
