Box Score BOX SCORE

PHILADELPHIA—Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) III of the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team (9-2, 5-1 PSAC) tipped in a last second shot to give the Huskies an 87-86 win over the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College (10-5).  It is the second time this season Bloomsburg has downed an opponent on a last second shot, the first coming against Pitt-Johnstown in BU's second game of the season.  All five Bloomsburg starters finished in double figures in scoring while Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) recorded a career high 12 assists.

Bloomsburg scored the game's first five points and after a Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) steal leading to a Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) throw down, the Huskies took a 9-2 lead forcing an early Chestnut Hill timeout.  Following the timeout Chestnut Hill scored back-to-back baskets, cutting the lead to three but a 7-0 run by the Huskies gave BU a 16-6 edge.

The Griffins would put together a run of their own, outscoring Bloomsburg 13-2 during a three minute stretch to take a 19-18 lead at the 12:28 mark.

The game remained close as the lead changed four times along with five ties.  The final lead change came at the end of the half on a Jakeem Bogans three pointer, sending the Griffins into halftime with a 43-40 lead.

Bloomsburg's big guys did the majority of the scoring in the first half for the Huskies.  Ed Hall (Washington, DC/Paint Branch) and Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) III each scored eight points while Jordan added another seven points and five rebounds.

The second half opened with the Griffins controlling the opening minutes of play, going up by as many as 10 at the 14:52 mark.

Following a BU timeout, Bloomsburg's Mike Varanavage (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan) converted an and-one opportunity coupled with a made basket by Jordan to cut the lead to five.  From there the game remained tight as the Chestnut Hill lead hovered around eight points for the next five minutes.

Chipping away at the lead, the Huskies pulled to within three points with 4:59 to play but a 7-2 run by Chestnut Hill brought the score to 80-72 in favor the Griffins.  However, BU responded with an 8-0 run of their own to tie things up at 80-80.  It was the first time BU had not trailed since the closing seconds of the first half.

The game was tied again at 82-82 after a Chestnut Hill dunk and a pair of made free throws by Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) with the game clock reading 1:25.  The Griffins took a two point lead after Alssene Saintiuls connected on a jump shot with 1:06 to play.

Saintilus would leave the game on the next possession after picking up his fifth foul, sending Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) to the free throw line for two shots.  Njoku hit one of two free throw attempts to shave the lead to one point with 49 seconds remaining.

Following a missed layup by the Griffins and an Ed Hall (Washington, DC/Paint Branch) rebound, the Huskies took their first lead since the first half on a Njoku layup with just 20 seconds remaining, 85-84.

With nine seconds left in regulation, Bloomsburg's Johnson committed his fourth foul of the game as he sent Jakeem Bogans to the line for a one-and-one chance.  Bogans made good on both attempts to give the Griffins a late one point lead.

With the game on the line Bloomsburg looked to Johnson, who earlier this season made a last second layup to beat Pitt-Johnstown, for the game winning bucket.  With seconds remaining Johnson pulled up a jumper, eyeing the win.  His shot came up short but BU's Webster soared for the rebound and tipped in the missed shot, giving the Huskies their ninth win of the season.

All five Bloomsburg starters scored double figures as Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) recorded a double-double leading all scorers with 25 points and grabbing a game high 10 rebounds.  Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) also posted a double-double, scoring 11 points and dished out a career high 12 assists.

Webster finished with 14 points, none as big as his last two, along with five rebounds and three blocks.  In his first start as a Husky, Njoku scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting including a 3-6 mark from downtown.  Ed Hall (Washington, DC/Paint Branch) finished with 12 points, five rebounds, and one block.

Bloomsburg will look to build on today's win as they travel to take on Gannon in PSAC play on Friday, January 6.  Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
