Men's Basketball Uses a 17-2 Run to Beat Slippery Rock, 62-58

Box Score BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team needed a 17-2 run late in the second half to top Slippery Rock (4-3, 2-3 PSAC), 62-58 in tonight's PSAC matchup.  Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) led all scorers with 21 points and nine rebounds as the Huskies improved to 8-1 and 5-0 in conference play.

Tonight's game was Bloomsburg's Alumni Weekend game which celebrated past BU basketball members, both players and coaching staff.  The Huskies recognized several members of team's past during a halftime presentation.

Bloomsburg opened the first 10:26 of play with a 17-9 run. During the nearly 11 minute stretch, Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) scored five points while Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill), Ed Hall (Washington, DC/Paint Branch), and Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) each added four a piece.

Slippery Rock regrouped and responded with a 13-0 run that lasted just over eight minutes to take a 22-17 lead.  Both teams would trade baskets to close out the first half with Bloomsburg trailing 32-25.  Jordan and Christmas combined for 15 first half points while Hall led BU with five rebounds.

In the second half, Slippery Rock extended their lead to 11 points with a 7-2 run in the first 3:39 of play.  The Huskies cut into The Rock's lead, trailing only 42-36 with 13:53 to play but Slippery Rock would again take an 11 point lead with 7:41 remaining.

From there, Bloomsburg would put it all together, defensively and offensively as the Huskies orchestrated a 17-2 run.  Ed Hall (Washington, DC/Paint Branch) started the BU run by knocking down a jumper and then converting a layup to bring the Huskies to within seven.

Christmas brought Bloomsburg to within four as he drained a three pointer on an assist from Johnson.  Following a missed layup and a defensive rebound by Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) III, Jordan hit a three of his own to bring the score to 56-55.  The made three pointer forced a Slippery Rock timeout.

Trailing by one, the Huskies defense needed to continue their impressive effort and did so by forcing a turnover and rejecting two shots, courtesy of Webster, on Slippery Rock's four possessions.  Following a missed layup and a defensive rebound by Webster, Johnson looked for Christmas coming off a screen and found him as Christmas sank his fifth three pointer of the night to give BU their first lead since 4:58 mark of the first half.

Clinging to a two point lead, Bloomsburg's Jordan was sent to the line with 34 seconds left.  Jordan made good on both attempts to give BU a four point edge.  Slippery Rock would come down and hit a jumper to pull back to within one.  It was their first basket since the 7:41 mark in the second half.

Jordan would get sent to the free throw line again, this time with nine seconds and a chance to make it a two possession game as he went to the line for one-and-one.  Jordan hit the front end of the one-and-one to make a three point game and gave BU some cushion, hitting his second to push the lead to four.  Following a missed three pointer, the Huskies took over the ball to complete a 62-58 comeback win.

On 7-of-16 shooting, Jordan led all scorers with 21 points, 13 coming in the second half.  Christmas finished with 16 points after knocking down five threes.  Hall was Bloomsburg's last player to finish with double digits, scoring 10 points and grabbing six boards.

BU's Johnson finished with eight points and seven assists while Webster chipped in four points, nine boards, and a season high four blocks.

For Slippery Rock, Jon Valeriano led the team with 15 points while Devin Taylor was the team's leading rebounder with 16 boards.  Luiz Santos recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.

The Huskies will have a quick turnaround as they look to stay perfect in the PSAC when they host the Lakers of Mercyhurst tomorrow.  Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at the Nelson Field House in Bloomsburg PA.
