Baseball Rallies Against Briarcliffe

HAMPTON, Va.--In the first of two games to be played Friday, the Bloomsburg University baseball team scored six runs in the eighth inning to rally against USCAA opponent Briarcliffe College. The Huskies came away with the 13-9 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season.

After Briarcliffe jumped out to a 2-0 start, Bloomsburg responded in the second as Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) doubled and scored on a wild pitch.

Briarcliffe scored another pair in the third to extend its lead to 4-1, but the Huskies reacted in the bottom of th inning as Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) and Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg) picked up hits and Seth Pauling (Allenwood/Montgomery) brought both home with a 2 RBI single to left.

The Seahawks scored five runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 9-3 advantage, but the Huskies began their rally quickly. The Maroon and Gold scored with Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) coming home on a wild pitch and another 2 RBI single from Pauling.

In the seventh, the Huskies closed the gap further, as an RBI single by Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) brought Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere) home to make the score 9-7.

Bloomsburg took control of the game in the eighth as Smith and Lloyd again reached base and Wise doubled to bring them home. Wise came home on a throwing error, and Kramer added a fourth run, reaching home on a wild pitch. Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) sac-flied to score Nick Eversole (Lewistown, Indian Valley) and Ianerio brought Deemer around on a triple for his second RBI of the day. The Huskies tallied six runs in the inning to clinch the 13-9 victory.

Scott Runzer (Newtown/Council Rock North) (1-0) picked up the win in relief, throwing 3 innings and allowing 4 runs and 4 hits with 2 strikeouts.

Bloomsburg will continue in the Shipbuilder Invitational, hosted by the Apprentice School, with its next opponent, Lock Haven University on Friday evening at 6 p.m.
