Kutztown Powers Past Baseball, 13-12

Box Score

HAMPTON, Va.--After jumping out to a 7-1 lead, the Bloomsburg University baseball team was eventually defeated by Kutztown University, 13-12, at the Builder Invitational hosted by the Newport News Apprentice School. With the loss, the Huskies level out to 2-2 on the season and will play in Sunday's third-place tournament game.

Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) got things going with a hit for Bloomsburg in the third inning. Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) followed with a single to bring Smith around to the plate before Seth Pauling (Allenwood/Montgomery) doubled to score Wise. Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) reached on a walk, and Nick Eversole (Lewistown, Indian Valley) singled to score Pauling.

Next at the plate, Paul Rosa IV (Wyomissing/Wilson) hit his first home run of the season, scoring another three runs to put the Huskies in front 6-0.

The Golden Bears struck back with a run in the bottom of the third to cut the lead to 6-1.

In the fourth, designated hitter Scott Runzer (Newtown/Council Rock North) hit the second Husky homer of the game and his first of the season to make the score 7-1.

Kutztown scored two more in the fourth and another run in the fifth to narrow the gap to 7-4.

The bottom of the seventh proved fatal for Bloomsburg, as kutztown rallied to score seven in the inning. The Golden Bears managed six hits and forced one error to take an 11-7 advantage.

Bloomsburg responded in the eighth, as both Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) and Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) walked and Runzer brought both home on a 2-RBI single to right. Smith reached on error and Wise singled to bring him home for the Huskies third run of the inning. In the bottom, the Golden Bears scored an insurance run to make the score 12-10.

In the ninth, Kramer and Eversole reached base courtesy of KU pitching mistakes. Ianiero brought both home on an error, and the Huskies tied the score at 12-12.

Nevertheless, Kutztown's Cody Montz singled and stole second before another single brought him to the plate for the Golden Bear's 13-12 walk-off win.

Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere) pitched the first 5 innings, tallying 3 strikeouts while giving up 7 hits, 2 walks, and 4 runs (2 earned). Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) took the mound for 3 innings, picking up 3 strikeouts but dropping 9 runs (5 earned).

On Sunday, the Huskies conclude the Builder Invitational with an appearance in the third-place game at noon.
