Men's Basketball Ends Season with Win

Huskies Down West Chester 61-58

WEST CHESTER—Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to a 61-58 win over West Chester on Saturday afternoon in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division game.

Despite the win the Huskies will not make next week's PSAC playoffs. Bloomsburg needed a to win and to have Cheyney lose, but the Wolves defeated Mansfield on Saturday to claim the final spot in the playoffs.

Bloomsburg trailed early in the game falling behind by a 9-2 score. The Huskies tough rallied with Jamar Smack (Philadelphia/State College) scoring five points and Johnson four points to put BU on top 13-9 six and a half minutes into play.

The team's traded leads for the next eight minutes before the Huskies closed out the half on a 15-4 run. Two free throws from Johnson put the Huskies on top 25-24 and a three-point play from Earl Knight (Haddonfield, NJ/LEAP Academy) gave the Huskies a 28-24 lead with 2:25 left in the half. Then later Knight's basket at the halftime buzzer put the visitors on top 36-28.

Bloomsburg pushed the lead early in the second half to 12 points on two occasions, the last coming on a three-pointer from Jesse Betar (Altoona/Altoona) with 13:41 to play, that made the score 45-33. West Chester then chipped away at the lead till it tied the game and then went ahead, 54-53, on two free throws from Khalif Foster with 3:35 to go.

With West Chester on top by a point, 56-55, BU's Jamar Smack (Philadelphia/State College) intercepted a pass with 26 seconds to go and was fouled. Smack hit both free throws putting the Huskies back in front 57-56. Following a West Chester miss, Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) rebounded for Bloomsburg and was fouled. Jordan hit both free throws giving Bloomsburg a three-point lead at 59-56.

After West Chester scored a layup to make it a one point game, Smack was fouled with three seconds remaining. The sophomore hit both free throws giving Bloomsburg a 61-58 edge. West Chester's last second, three-quarters court heave hit off the back of the rim giving Bloomsburg the win.

Along with Johnson's 20 points, Jordan finished with nine points and 13 rebounds for Bloomsburg, which ends the season with a record of 11-15, 7-7 in the PSAC East. West Chester, 14-12, 5-9 in the PSAC East, got 13 points from Eli Daniel.
