BLOOMSBURG—Five individuals will be honored with induction to the Eastern Wrestling League Hall of Fame on Sunday, March 6 at Bloomsburg University. The members of the 2011 class are George Carter, Carl Poff, Troy Sunderland, Ken Chertow and Tom Martucci.
Carter was a standout for the Bloomsburg University wrestling team in the late 1990's and early part of the 2000's. Carter was a four-time NCAA qualifier and a two-time Eastern Wrestling League Champion. He finished his career with a record of 122-24, the fourth best win total in school history. Carter's best season came in 1999-2000 when he went 37-4 and won the EWL championship. As a senior he went 32-6 and won his second EWL title.
Poff, a former wrestler at Bloomsburg, went on to a brilliant coaching career at Lock Haven. As the head coach of the Bald Eagles from 1990 to 2002, he posted a career record of 167-62-3. He coached two wrestlers to national championships along with 14 All-Americans and 20 EWL champions. He also guided the Bald Eagles to four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championships and was a six-time PSAC Coach of the Year and two-time EWL Coach of the Year.
Sunderland is a graduate of Penn State and competed for the Nittany Lions when they were members of the EWL. Sunderland posted a career record of 100-13-3 and was a three-time NCAA qualifier earning All-American honors each of those three times. He won one EWL title in his career and was a runner-up one time. He helped the Nittany Lions finish second at the 1993 NCAA national championships.
Chertow is also a graduate of Penn State competing for the Nittany Lions when they were affiliated with the EWL. He was a two-time EWL Champion and posted a career record of 115-36-3. Three times he earned All-American honors. Chertow also excelled in the classroom earning Academic All-American honors three times. He was also a member of the 1988 United States Olympic team.
Martucci has been associated with Bloomsburg University wrestling for nearly 20 years as an assistant, a head coach and later a volunteer assistant. As a head coach Martucci helped coach two NCAA All-Americans and nine EWL Champions. As an assistant coach, he helped coach seven All-Americans, 14 EWL champions and 18 PSAC Champions.
Action at the 36th annual EWL championships will start at 10 a.m. with the first session. The second session will be begin at 5 p.m. followed by the Hall of Fame ceremony and then the Parade of Champions which will precede the championship and consolation finals.
