Men's Basketball Loses 3OT Heartbreaker at Millersville

Box Score

MILLERSVILLEFor the fourth time this season, the Bloomsburg men's basketball team recovered from a double-digit deficit to send their game into overtime, but for the first of those four times, the Huskies were unable to come away with the win. Millersville University defeated Bloomsburg University, 108-103, in a triple overtime game in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action on Saturday.

Much like the first teams' first meeting this season, Millersville jumped out quickly, taking an 11-2 advantage in the game's opening minutes. A 9-2 run by the Huskies narrowed the gap to 13-11 just moments later.

The Marauders took their largest lead of the period at 37-23 with three minutes remaining and carried an eight-point advantage at the intermission, 42-34.

Millersville continued to roll and broke open the game at 49-34 three minutes into the second half. With six minutes remaining, a set of technical fouls gave Millersville six shots at the foul line, and the Marauders obtained their largest lead at 16 points, 65-49.

In what has become routine for Bloomsburg, the Huskies erased a late double-digit lead for the fifth time this season. With time waning, Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) came through making three-straight 3-point shots, slashing the Millersville lead to just three at 71-68.

Trailing 75-73 with their final possession, the Huskies looked to Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) III, who tied the game with a last-second layup, sending Bloomsburg into their second straight overtime game.

In the first extra period, Millersville scored the first six points, leading 81-75. At the other end, Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) completed a three-point play, and Jesse Betar (Altoona/Altoona) scored his first points of the period with a three-pointer to tie the game at 81-81 with just over a minute to play.

Rob Wyley made a layup to give Millersville the lead, missed an added free throw, and the Marauders got the rebound. Another foul sent Wyley to the line for a pair, but he missed both, leaving the door open for the Maroon and Gold.

Webster would respond by sinking a pair from the charity stripe, tying the game at 83-83.

Mike Seibert threw a long pass to Demond Vance who re-gained the lead for Millersville; Webster responded with a full-court pass to Betar, who drew a foul on a made layup and was sent to the line with the game tied at 85-85 with 0.9 second remaining. Betar would miss the free throw, and the game was sent to another extra frame.

In double  overtime, the Huskies took their first lead of the game off a three-pointer from Betar—BU led 88-87. The teams see-sawed with the lead, and with 30 seconds left, the game was still tied 94-94. With 21.5 remaining, Millersville's Seibert sank a pair for a two-point lead, and with 1.5 ticks on the clock, Jordan tied the game with a layup, initiating a third overtime period.

With the game tied 94-94, foul trouble caught up to the Huskies, who were playing without several key disqualified players. Webster had a layup with three minutes remaining, and MU's Jaymes Miller responded in kind to tie the game at a century apiece.

Seibert and Miller scored the game's next five points, and Millersville took a 105-100 lead. Despite a solid dunk from Webster, the Huskies failed to regain the lead, and the Marauders escaped with the 108-103 triple overtime victory.

Five Huskies scored in double-digits, led by Jordan with 28 points on 10 for 20 shooting from the field. The redshirt-freshman made 6 of 6 from the foul line and added 13 rebounds. Webster also notched a double-double, contributing 15 points and game-highs of 14 rebounds and 7 blocks.

Betar tied his career-high with 19 points and tallied a game-high 7 assists.  Christmas recorded 14 points, while Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) got on the board with 11.

Millersville's Vance led all players with 33 points, while Seibert scored 24, Miller had 14, and Brandon Brown scored 10. Wyley led the Marauders with 10 rebounds.

The game was coach John Sanow's first triple-overtime game at the helm of the Bloomsburg program. It also marked the first time the Huskies have scored at least 100 since the 2005-06 season.

Bloomsburg (8-12, 4-4 PSAC East) hits the road to face Shippensburg University on Wednesday, February 9, at 8 p.m. Millersville (9-10, 4-4 PSAC East) travels to play Cheyney University at the same time.
