Baseball Scores 10 in Sixth to Rout Young Harris

YOUNG HARRIS, GA.--The Bloomsburg University baseball team scored 10 runs in the sixth inning to defeat Young Harris College, 16-3, on Saturday. After splitting with YHC in two games, the Huskies (6-5) will play a rubber match on Sunday afternoon.

With the Huskies up 1-0, Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) hit a two-run homer in the fourth to put Bloomsburg up 3-0 through the fifth inning.

In the sixth, Bloomsburg relied on small-ball tactics to bat around the order and bring 10 runners to the plate. The Huskies recorded seven hits in the inning, with only one going for an extra base. Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg) recorded an RBI double late in the inning, while the Huskies picked up three additional bases on walks and one on a hit-by-pitch.

Young Harris failed to get on the scoreboard until the sixth inning, and the team's three runs proved ineffective in combating the Huskies' massive lead.

Smarrelli finished 4 for 5 from the plate with 2 runs and 3 RBI. Lloyd hit 3 for 5 with 3 runs and 2 RBI. Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) also picked up three hits on 6 at-bats while scoring two runs.

On the mound, Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) tabbed his second win of the season after throwing 6 innings while giving up just 7 hits, 1 run (1 earned), and 1 walk. He also struck out 4 on the day. Matt Dean, Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), and Dean Kenniff (North Wales/North Penn) also pitched effectively for the Huskies.

Bloomsburg and Young Harris will face off again on Sunday at 12 p.m.
