YOUNG HARRIS, GA—The Young Harris College Mountain Lions beat the Bloomsburg University baseball team 17-8 Friday night in the first of a three game series.
The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) singled with one out and later scored on a double by
Scott Runzer (Newtown/Council Rock North). The Mountains Lions though answered with seven runs in the home half of the first and tacked on two more runs in each of the second and third innings to take an 11-1 lead.
Bloomsburg cut into the lead in the top of the fifth. The Huskies loaded the bases for Runzer who hit a grand slam homer on the first pitch of his at-bat to cut the deficit to 11-5.
In the top of the seventh the Huskies cut into the lead once again scoring three times. Runzer doubled,
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown, Indian Valley) and
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) both walked setting the stage for a
Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia)'s bases-clearing single making it an 11-8 game.
Young Harris put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh and four more in the bottom of the eighth.
Runzer finished 3-5 with five RBI and two runs scored, while Ianiero went 2-5 with three RBI for Bloomsburg, now 5-5. Young Harris improves to 15-9 with the win.
