Game 2 Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG--In two close games on Friday, the Bloomsburg University baseball team was unable to pick up a win, as Shippensburg University held on to win both games of the doubleheader, 7-6 and 3-2. The series maked this season's first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division contests for both teams. With the losses, Bloomsburg falls to an even 7-7 (0-2 PSAC East) on the year, while Shippensburg improves to 9-11 (2-0).

In the first inning of game one, the Red Raiders jumped on the board by scoring five runs in the first inning. In the second, Ship added another pair, and the Huskies quickly found themselves in a 7-0 hole.

Shippensburg starter Tom Bush pitched exceptionally in the early innings, giving up just one hit through the fourth.

In the fifth inning, the Huskies were finally able to get on the board. Nick Eversole (Lewistown, Indian Valley) and Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) reached base, setting up a two-run single from lead-off hitter Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia).

Trailing 7-2, Bloomsburg managed to break down Bush in the seventh inning. Eversole singled, while Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) and Meyer walked to load the bases before Bush was forced to sit. Ianiero pushed a run home on a walk, and Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) brought home another on a ground-out.

With two outs in the inning, Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg) singled through the left side, bringing two runners home and the score to 7-6. Scott Runzer (Newtown/Council Rock North) would single to bring the tying-run to second base, but the Red Raiders would close out the game with a fly-out on the next batter.

Bush (3-0) received the win for Shippensburg, recording 7 strikeouts, 2 walks, and 5 runs (5 earned) in 6.1 innings; Kody Kibler was credited with the save. Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere) (0-1) was dealt his first loss of the season after dropping 5 runs (4 earned) before retiring from the game. Mike Rossetti (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) had three strikeouts on the mound, having thrown six innings.

In game two, Eversole singled to bring home a run in the second to put the Huskies up 1-0. The Red Raiders responded by scoring three in the next two innings.

Neither team scored again until the top of the seventh, when Lloyd singled to score Smith from second base. In the end, the Huskies stranded the tying run for the second time on the day, and Shippensburg won 3-2.

Ianiero and Smith were both 2-for-4 in the game to lead the Bloomsburg batters.

BU Starter Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) (2-2) threw only 80 pitches to navigate the complete six innings, striking out six with no walks. Nick Umberger (3-2) tossed 6.2 innings for Shippensburg, striking out three with a walk. Ted Williams entered the game for the final out and his first save of the year.

The teams will travel to Bloomsburg for the second double-header of the weekend in what will be the home opener for the Huskies. Saturday's games begin at 1 p.m.
