BLOOMSBURG--Three runs in the sixth inning of game two helped the Bloomsburg University baseball team save the day, as the Huskies split their home-opener with Shippensburg University at Danny Litwhiler Field on Saturday. After the Red Raiders recorded a 5-0 shutout in the first game, the Huskies responded with a 4-1 win to stave off a four-game sweep over both days.

Saturday's games capped the first weekend of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern division play.

In game one, Shippensburg scored a run in the third and three more in the fourth to break open a 4-0 lead. The Red Raiders added one more in the seventh.

For the Huskies, their offense was stonewalled by Shippensburg pitcher Ted Williams, who navigated the complete seven-inning game while allowing only three hits. The junior southpaw recorded 4 strikeouts and 1 walk in the 5-0 shutout.

Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) (2-1) received his first loss of the year, allowing 4 runs (1 earned) in 8 hits with 5 strikeouts and 1 walk in 5.1 innings. Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) closed the game and had 1 strikeout in his 1.2 innings.

In game two, the Huskies struck first blood in the fourth when Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) reached on a walk, and Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg) batted him home. The Red Raiders responded with a run of their own in the fifth.

With the game tied 1-1, Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and stole second. Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia)'s well-placed bunt got him safely to first while advancing Meyer. Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere) came through with an RBI double, and Lloyd also had an RBI double, giving the Huskies three runs in the inning and a winning 4-1 advantage.

Deemer finished the day as the only Husky with a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 with 1 RBI and 1 run in game two.

Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) (1-1) won the game on the mound for Bloomsburg, throwing 6 innings while yielding 4 walks and hits but only 1 run. Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) entered the game for the seventh inning, picking up his second save of the year. Ship's Cam Richardson (1-1) pitched 5 innings of 1-hit, 1-run ball, but was credited with the Huskies' go-ahead run in the sixth and the subsequent loss.

Bloomsburg (8-8, 1-3 PSAC East) will continue divisional play by travelling to West Chester University on Friday, March 25 at 1 p.m. Shippensburg (10-11, 3-1 PSAC East) will visit Kutztown University on the same date.
