Baseball Splits with West Chester

WEST CHESTER--Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) gave up just three runs in seven innings during the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, as the Bloomsburg University baseball team split with West Chester University in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action. West Chester scored a walk-off run in the day's first game for a 5-4 victory before the Huskies responded with a 9-3 win in the second.

In game one, West Chester (8-11, 2-4 PSAC East) took a 2-0 lead after two innings. In the third,  Bloomsburg (9-9, 2-4 PSAC East) answered with three hits and two runs to tie the game.

After a WCU run in the bottom of the third, the Huskies added another pair of runs off an RBI-double by Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) and RBI-single by Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia), putting Bloomsburg in front 4-3.

West Chester knotted the game with a run in the fifth, and in the seventh, BU pitcher Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) forced two fly outs before giving up a double to Reid Pulford and walk-off single by Joe Wendle.

Voorhees (2-3) finished with 5 runs (5 earned) and 1 strikeout in the complete game on the mound. Matt Zielinski tossed 6.0 innings for the Golden Rams, yielding 4 runs (2 earned) while racking up 7 strikeouts. Closer Brent Roehrich (2-0) received the win after 1.0 inning of work.

Smith finished the game 3-for-4 from the plate with 2 runs and an RBI. Ianiero was a perfect 3-for-3 with a run and RBI, while Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg) (2-for-4) was the only other Husky with a hit.

In the second game, Bloomsburg struck quickly, as Ianiero, Smith, and Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere) led off the first inning with three hits. Scott Runzer (Newtown/Council Rock North) hit a double down the right line to bring home two runs, as the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one.

WCU starter Jordan Lehman gave up more runs when Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) and Ianiero bunted to reach base in the second inning, and Deemer brought them home on a single. Lloyd doubled to center to score Deemer, and the Huskies extended the lead to 6-0.

West Chester narrowed the advantage with three runs over the third and fourth innings.

Leading 6-3, the Huskies took advantage of replacement pitcher Dylan Porter by scoring three more runs. The inning was highlighted by a 2-RBI double from Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana), and Bloomsburg cruised to a 9-3 win.

Ianiero, Deemer, and Runzer were all 2-for-4 on the game and stood out as the Huskies' batters with multiple hits.

Cooperman (3-1) completed the game with 8 strikeouts, 2 walks and 3 runs (3 earned).

For WCU, Lehman (1-3) picked up the loss with 2 strikeouts, 8 hits, and 6 runs (6 earned). Porter gave up 3 runs (2 earned) with 3 strikeouts.

The two teams will complete their 2011 showdown with a doubleheader on Bloomsburg's Danny Litwhiler Field. The games will be played on Monday, March 28, starting at 1 p.m.
