SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.VA.--The Bloomsburg University baseball team began its 2011 Spring Break roadtrip by splitting a doubleheader against Shepherd University on Saturday. Shepherd (4-3) rallied from a 7-4 defecit to win the first game 12-8, but the Huskies (4-3) responded by posting eight runs in the fourth inning to take the second game 8-4.
In game one, the Huskies dropped three runs in the first, but equalized the score, 3-3 in the fourth inning.
Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) hit an RBI-single and
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) followed with a single to bring in two more.
In the fifth,
Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) scored on a sacrifice fly,
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) hit in a run, and both
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) and Meyer navigated the bases to add four more runs to the Bloomsburg total.
Trailing 7-4, Shepherd had a massive fifth inning, as the Huskies gave up their first grand slam of the season, and the Rams went on to post seven runs in the inning, allowing them to eventually secure the 12-8 victory.
Smith was the only Bloomsburg player to record multiple hits in the game, going 2 for 4 at the plate with 3 RBI and 1 run.
In the second game,
Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) pitched the complete six-inning game, allowing 4 runs (4 earned) while striking-out 5 and giving up 0 walks.
Bloomsburg was held scoreless for much of the game, but the fourth inning proved momentous. The Huskies recorded five singles in the inning, including a shot to left by Meyer that brought home two runners and an RBI-single to center by Ianiero.
Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg) capped off the inning with a three-run homer to give Bloomsburg eight runs in the inning; the home run was Lloyd's second of the season.
Though Shepherd managed to score 2 runs in the sixth, Bloomsburg led 8-4 when the game was called, giving the Huskies their fourth win of the season.
Ianiero was Bloomsburg's most-consistent hitter in game two, going 3 for 4 at the plate while recording a run and batting in one.
Bloomsburg and Shepherd will play a nine-inning rubber match on Monday at 1 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday but has been postponed due to forecasted inclement weather.
