Bloomsburg Baseball Splits With Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, TN—The Bloomsburg University baseball team split a doubleheader with Carson-Newman on Tuesday winning the opener 2-1, then dropping the nightcap by a score of 4-3.

GAME ONE
In game one starter Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) scattered five hits over eight and third innings to lead the Huskies to the win.

Bloomsburg and Carson-Newman were locked in a scoreless battle going to the top of the fifth inning. Catcher Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) led off the inning with walk, but was gunned down trying to steal second. Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) then followed with a single to center before Joey Iniero doubled to right center scoring Meyer with the game's first run. Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) then reached on an infield single putting runners at the corners. Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere) then delivered an RBI single scoring Ianiero and giving the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

Cooperman was solid throughout retiring 14 straight batters at one point from the second to the seventh innings. In the bottom of the eighth C-N's Lance Reed doubled to lead off with Ryan Hanks coming in to run for him Hanks then came around to score on a ground out to make it 2-1.

In the bottom of the ninth the Eagles threatened to score loading the bases with one out. Cooperman was relieved by Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) with one gone with Kline inducing a fielder's choice out at home plate for the second out of the inning. Kline then got the final batter of the game on a ground out giving Bloomsburg the victory.

Ianiero went 2-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) went 3-5 at the plate for the Huskies. Cooperman struckout two and walked one to get his second win of the young season.

GAME TWO
In game two the Huskies and Eagles were scoreless in the top of the second when Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg) singled with one out. After a strikeout, Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) walked to put runners on first and second. Ianiero then laced a double to right field scoring both Wise and Russell putting Bloomsburg on top 2-0.

After Carson-Newman answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, the Huskies regained the lead in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) reached on an error and moved to second on an infield single by Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere). Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg) then doubled home Smith before a pop up ended the inning.

The Eagles scored the tying and go-ahead runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after loading the bases with two outs. Evan Patterson then singled home two runs putting the home team on top 4-3.

In the seventh the Huskies did get the tying run to second after Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) walked and went to second on a passed ball. But the Eagles got the final out to earn the split.

Mike Rossetti (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) suffered the loss for the Huskies, now 5-4. He went the distance striking out three and walking three.

Bloomsburg plays at Lincoln Memorial on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
