Baseball Halves with Mansfield

BLOOMSBURG—After a tough 11-2 loss in game one, the Huskies answered with a 7-2 win in game two, as the Bloomsburg University baseball team split with Mansfield University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader on Monday.

Bloomsburg now stands at 18-18 (8-12 PSAC East) on the season, while Mansfield carries a record of 17-14 (6-10 PSAC East).

In game one, Bloomsburg posted a strong first inning, including a single by Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere) and a two-RBI shot by Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg). Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) added a third hit with two RBI's, while Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) and Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) scored runs. After one, the Huskies led 4-1.

Reigning PSAC East co-Pitcher of the Week Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) kept the game close on the mound, allowing just three runs with five strikeouts through the first five innings.

In the sixth, Mansfield struck hard by scoring six runs, four of which came off a grand slam by Ernie Ruch. The Mountaineers took a 9-4 lead and added a pair in the seventh for the 11-4 victory.

Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) (0-4) took the loss for the Huskies, yielding five runs (four earned). Eric Rosenberger (6-1) completed the seven-inning game with six strikeouts, seven hits, four runs (one earned) and three walks.

In game two, the Huskies again managed a four-run first. Meyer led off with a triple, and Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) slipped an RBI-double into right center. Deemer and Lloyd were both hit by pitches and rounded the bases for runs, and Smith and Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) notched RBI's, while BU took a 4-0 lead.

Bloomsburg added more runs in the second inning with Ianiero getting another RBI-hit, Lloyd launching a double to right, and Smarrelli knocking a two-run shot to left field. The Huskies added three to take a 7-0 advantage.

Mike Rossetti (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) (3-5) kept the Mountaineers quiet for the entire game, allowing just two runs and five hits while striking out seven en route to the 7-2 win. Joel Worthington (4-2) had a rough day, as he let across seven runs in only four outs.

On the day, Ianiero led the Maroon and Gold, hitting 4-for-6 from the plate with two RBI, two runs and a pair of doubles. Smarrelli went 3-for-5 with three RBI, a run and two doubles, while Deemer was 3-for-6 with three RBI and a run.

Bloomsburg is next scheduled for a road trip to Philadelphia University on Tuesday, April 26. The non-conference doubleheader is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
