BLOOMSBURG—After two high scoring games on Danny Litwhiler Field, both teams came away with a win, as the Bloomsburg University baseball team split a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader with Kutztown University on Friday.

Kutztown (21-16, 11-11 PSAC East) had a big seventh inning to secure game one, 8-5, while Bloomsburg (19-19, 9-13 PSAC East) held on to win game two, 11-9.

Prior to the games, seven seniors were recognized for their dedication to the Bloomsburg University baseball program: Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton), Seth Pauling (Allenwood/Montgomery), Mike Rossetti (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg), Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia), Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg), Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg), and Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere).

In game one, seniors Deemer, Ianiero, and Lloyd each scored a run in the first inning, giving BU a quick 3-0 lead.

Kutztown answered by scoring three runs in the second and another in the fourth to take a 4-3 advantage.

Deemer doubled to lead off the third inning, and a hit by Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) scored Deemer to level the score at 4-4.

In the bottom of the sixth, Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) launched his second home run of the season, giving Bloomsburg a 5-4 edge entering the final inning.

The Golden Bears came out hot in the seventh inning when Shayne Houck and Kyle Stoudt hit back-to-back home runs to regain Kutztown's lead, 6-5. Brad Stoudt brought home two more runs on a single later in the inning, as KU opened up an 8-5 lead and held Bloomsburg quiet to secure the victory.

Jonathan Grosse (4-3) earned the win after striking out eight in six innings, while Dominick Ruscitti recorded his third save of the season. BU's Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) (3-5) took the loss after yielding three Kutztown's final-inning runs.

In game two, Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South), Ianiero, and Lloyd all scored runs to put the Huskies up 3-0 after one. In the second inning, Kutztown responded to tie the game 3-3.

Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) doubled in the second inning and was brought home by Meyer for a 4-3 advantage.

Lloyd slugged his eighth homer of the season in the bottom of the third inning; his solo shot extended the Huskies' lead to two at 5-3.

In the top of the fifth, Kutztown added a pair of runs to even the score at 5-5.

In the bottom of the same inning, Bloomsburg broke loose, loading the bases on the opening three batters. Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) slipped a two-RBI single into right center, and Kramer later knocked in two more on a double to left center. Deemer added a third pair of runs with his double down the right-field line, as the Huskies totaled six runs for a 11-5 lead.

Kutztown got a rally going in the seventh, scoring four runs to slash the deficit to 11-9. The Golden Bears managed to get the tying run to first base, but BU's closer Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) forced the game-ending fly out and sealed Bloomsburg's win.

Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) (6-2) won the game after allowing eight hits in 6.1 innings. Geedey notched the first save of his career after throwing the final two outs. J.R. Seader (2-2) was dealt the loss after allowing nine runs in four innings.

On the day, Eversole, Smarrelli, and Deemer led the Huskies at the plate, each going 3-for-6. Lloyd had four runs with a slugging percentage of 1.200, while Eversole and Smarrelli each tallied three RBI.

The Huskies will wrap their regular season and the second half of the series with a doubleheader at Kutztown on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Bloomsburg remains in the hunt for a spot in the PSAC playoffs, but the Huskies will need to win both of Saturday's games and receive help from around the division to secure their berth.
