Baseball Drops Pair to #12 Millersville

MILLERSVILLE--On Saturday, the Bloomsburg University baseball team was unable to fend off the Marauders as No. 12 Millersville University won both games of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division doubleheader, winning 6-5 (8 in.) and 7-2. With the losses, Bloomsburg slips to 11-13 (2-8 PSAC East) on the season, while Millersville improves to 21-6 (8-3 PSAC East).

In game one, the Huskies' performance was highlighted by a 2-RBI single from Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) in the second inning, as Bloomsburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead through three innings courtesy of runs by Howie Deemer (Washington, N.J./Belvidere), Gino Wise (Mechanicsburg/Mechanicsburg), Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain), and Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia).

Millersville fought back and carried a 5-4 advantage into the seventh inning. Paul Rosa IV (Wyomissing/Wilson) scored a small-ball equalizer run off hits by Kramer and Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) to send the game into extra frames.

In the bottom of the eighth, Ryan Chesler hit a lead-off home run to seal the Huskies' fate and a 6-5 win for the Marauders.

Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) gave up just three runs in five innings, yet it was Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) (0-3) who was dealt the loss after striking out three but dropping the game-winning run.

In the second game, Meyer scored off an RBI-single by Ianiero to put BU up 1-0 in the first, but the Marauders socred seven unanswered to take a commanding 7-1 lead.

Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg) hit his fifth homer on the season in the sixth inning, but the Maroon and Gold were unable to overcome the deficit, and MU carried the 7-2 win.

Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) (3-2) incurred his second loss after dropping seven runs with one strikeout. Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) through 2.2 scoreless innings to close the game, yielding three walks and striking out two.

Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) was the only Husky to post a multiple-hit game on the day, going 2-for-3 on two singles in game two.

The Huskies return home to Bloomsburg on April 10, when they will face Millersville in the second half of the series. Sunday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Danny Litwhiler Field.
