JOHNSTOWN--After trailing 7-2 through seven innings, the Huskies could not rally back, as the Bloomsburg University baseball team fell to the Crimson Hawks of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 7-5, in the second round of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship tournament Thursday at Point Stadium.
After a scoreless first inning, IUP struck first, picking up four big runs in the bottom of the second. The Crimson Hawks recorded hits on seven straight batters to lead off the inning, including three consecutive doubles.
Trailing 4-0, Bloomsburg answered in the third beginning with a lead-off double by
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South).
Joey Ianiero (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) brought home one run, while
Jerry Lloyd (Mifflinburg/Mifflinburg) batted in the other, as the Huskies scored a pair to make it a 4-2 ballgame.
IUP added another run in the third and two more in the fifth to take a commanding 7-2 lead into the eighth inning.
Bloomsburg's Ianiero reached on a fielding error and was scored on BU's first hit of the inning courtesy of
Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana).
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) registered an RBI-double, and
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) singled through the right side to add another run, as the Huskies narrowed the defecit to 7-5.
The Crimson Hawks shut down the momentum in the ninth, and their solid defense dismissed the Huskies in a three-up, three-down at-bat, as IUP won 7-5 to advance to the semi-finals.
Starter
Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) (3-6) had a rough outing for the Huskies, yielding 10 hits through 2.1 innings.
Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) finished the game with six strikeouts on 5.2 innings.
For the Crimson Hawks, Chris Douglas (6-4) got the win after giving up just five hits and two runs through 6.0 innings. Christian Wolosik earned his first save of the year after tossing the final four outs.
At the plate for BU, Smith (2-for-3) and Kramer (2-for-4) were the only batsmen with multiple hits. Five different Huskies scored runs, batted in by five unique players.
Bloomsburg continues in the double-loss tournament and will next face Shippensburg University in an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. on Friday morning.
