BLOOMSBURG—
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) of the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team (13-3, 9-2 PSAC) scored the team's final four points to seal a 75-72 win over visiting Mansfield University (6-9, 3-8 PSAC). The Huskies held off the Mountaineers, who made a strong push in the second half, to win their fourth game in a row and snap an eight game losing streak to Mansfield.
A large part of tonight's win for Bloomsburg was their effort on the boards. The Huskies tied their season high for rebounds with 44 and limited the Mountaineers to just 27 rebounds.
The Mountaineers opened the game by going up 12-5 at the 14 minute mark and would go up by as many as eight with 8:57 remaining in the first half. However, Bloomsburg would go on a 9-0 run over the next minute and forty-six seconds to take a 25-24 lead.
Bloomsburg would eventually go up by as many as five in the first half and would take a 39-36 lead into halftime following a
Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) lay-in. In the first half, seven lead changes took place as well as four ties.
BU's Jordan paced the Huskies in the first half with 12 points and four rebounds. Johnson added another eight points and four assists along with two steals.
John Schwarz (Delta/Perry Hall) provided a spark from the bench scoring eight first half points and pulling down five rebounds.
In the second half, both teams traded baskets as the BU lead remained at three with 17:03 to play. From there Bloomsburg put together a 9-2 run behind four points from Jordan to take a 54-44 lead, their largest of the game, with 13:31 to play.
The Bloomsburg lead hovered around eight points and eventually peaked at nine with 10:53 remaining. Mansfield would not go away quietly as they orchestrated a 10-0 run over the next two minutes to take their first lead of the second half, 58-57.
Answering right back with a layup from Schwarz, the Huskies went back on top 59-58. Clinging to the slim lead, BU pushed their advantage to 67-62 with 5:47 remaining as Johnson tossed an alley-oop from half court to a streaking
Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) III who threw it down with two hands.
A pesky Mansfield team answered with a Joe Bell jumper and a Chuck Harper layup to cut the lead to just one with 4:23 to play.
Coming off a double screen at the top of the arc,
Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) gave the Huskies a lift by draining his third three-pointer of the night, giving BU a four point cushion with 4:01 to play. From there, a stretch of two and half minutes went by with no scoring until a BU turnover led to a Chuck Harper dunk with 2:25 left.
After getting fouled inside, Webster hit the second-leg of two free throws at the 2:04 mark, pushing the BU lead to 71-68. With 1:47 remaining, Jordan picked up his fourth foul, sending Harper to line for two shots. Harper connected on both, bringing the score to 71-70.
Bloomsburg's next possession was key. With the shot clock dwindling and a BU turnover looming, Jordan converted a layup in heavy traffic as the shot clock expired, to put Bloomsburg ahead by three with 1:12 left in the game.
Mansfield's Cory Henneghan missed a wide open three in the corner but Josh Dupuy was there for the offensive rebound but he missed his layup attempt, leading to a Bloomsburg rebound. However, Henneghan made a heads up play by forcing a jump-ball, leading to a BU turnover with 30 seconds remaining.
19 seconds ran off the clock before Mansfield's Haprer hit a contested jumper to bring the score to 73-72. With the game on the line, Bloomsburg put the ball in the hands of their best free throw shooter,
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport).
Jordan would get sent to the line with five seconds for a one-and-one opportunity. Jordan's first attempt rolled in off the front of the rim, pushing the lead to two and forcing a Mountaineer timeout. The break in play did not affect Jordan as he stepped up to the line and drained his second attempt.
Mansfield had a chance to send things into overtime as Henneghan launched an open turnaround three pointer. His attempt came up short as the Huskies won their fourth in a row.
Bloomsburg had four players in double-digits as Jordan led all scorers with 22 points while also grabbing seven rebounds. He was a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line as well.
John Schwarz (Delta/Perry Hall) put together another solid performance, recording another double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, four coming on the offensive end.
Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) had an effective night, scoring 12 points and assisting on eight baskets. Njoku was as efficient as ever, scoring 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
For the Mountaineers, Chuck Harper led the way with 17 points while Kyle Bradley added another 14.
The Huskies will look to make it five straight as they travel to take on West Chester in a PSAC East showdown. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. in West Chester, PA.
