CLARION—
Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill)'s jumper with three seconds to play lifted the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team to an 87-85 come-from-behind win over Clarion University on Saturday. The win was the fourth this season for the Huskies in the final 10 seconds of a game.
Johnson's basket capped a late rally for the Huskies which trailed by seven with seven minutes to play. On the game winning shot Johnson hit a jumper from about 15 feet just to the right of the key. Clarion called timeout with three seconds to play and did get off a shot by Winfield Willis as time expired, but the shot was short.
Bloomsburg scored the game's first bucket on a jumper by
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) before Clarion took control of the game and slowly built a lead that ballooned to 17 points, 28-11, with 8:08 to play in the first half. The Huskies though closed out the half with a 26-13 run to make it a two point game at the break, 41-39.
In the 26-point outburst to finish the half,
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) and
Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) each scored seven points, while Jordan added five points.
Clarion opened the second half by pushing the lead back to nine points, 50-41, with 17:30 to play. But Bloomsburg responded with a 12-3 run to knot the game at 53-all. Njoku led the comeback hitting back-to-back three pointers that were in the middle of two baskets by Jordan.
Later with the game tied at 59-all with 10:37 to play, the Golden Eagles outscored the Huskies 15-7 to lead by seven points, 74-67. Bloomsburg began its comeback with a free throw from
Nasir Jones (Philadelphia/Franklin Learning Center) before Jordan hit a jumper with Njoku draining a three-pointer on the next possession to cut the deficit 74-73 with 6:05 to play.
Later with the Clarion on top 81-78, Christmas hit a three-pointer to tie the game with 2:39 to play to tie the game for the fourth time. On the Huskies next possession, a Webster dunk put the Huskies on top for the first time since the opening minute of the game. Johnson then gave the Huskies their biggest lead of the night at 85-81 when he hit a jumper in the lane.
Clarion though tied the game with two free throws and a jumper from Winfield Willis setting up the Huskies late game heroics.
Jordan finished with 23 points for the Huskies, while Njoku added a career-high 18 points. Christmas chipped in with 16 points, while Johnson notched 13 points with
Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) getting 10 points.
Clarion, 10-4, 6-2 in the PSAC West, got 31 points from Willis and 23 from Paul McQueen.
Bloomsburg improves to 10-3 with the win and concludes PSAC cross-over action with a record of 6-2. The Huskies will be back in action on Wednesday at Shippensburg starting at 8 p.m.
