LINCOLN UNIVERSITY – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team had four players score in double figures and outrebounded Lincoln University, but a pair of Lincoln runs combined with Bloomsburg turnovers plagued the Huskies in dropping an 81-67 decision in non-conference action at Manuel Rivero Gymnasium.
The Huskies (2-2) were led offensively by junior guard
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) and his five three-pointers to extend his streak of consecutive games with a three-pointer to 14. He tied his season-high of 17 points while grabbing five rebounds.
Overcoming a 22-point second-half deficit, the Huskies put together some fine shooting in the final minutes to pull with 10. Unfortunately, it was as close as Bloomsburg got to nearly pulling off a second consecutive double-digit comeback. The Lions shot 17-for-28 for nearly 61 percent in the second half after shooting just 38.7 percent in the opening half.
Freshman point guard
Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy) scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half as he did his best to keep the Huskies in the game. He had a team-best three assists against the Lions (4-1) and made all eight of his free throws.
Junior forward
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport), this week's Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Athlete of the Week, scored 14 points including a 9-for-10 performance at the free throw line. Jordan grabbed eight rebounds, but was hit with foul trouble midway through the first half for his first game without recording a double-double this season.
Freshman forward
Wes Lyons (Millville/Millville), the PSAC East Freshman of the Week, rounded out the quartet of double-digit scorers for Bloomsburg with 14 including a pair of three-pointers.
Regardless of where Bloomsburg found its scoring, 20 turnovers including 13 in the first half put BU in a hole in which it simply could not claw its way out of. Lincoln turned BU's giveaways into 28 points and outscored Bloomsburg 38-18 in the paint.
The teams traded buckets for the majority of the first half, but Bloomsburg's turnovers turned costly, as the Lions took advantage by putting together a lengthy run. Spanning over six minutes, Lincoln turned a 15-14 lead into a 30-15 lead off a 15-1 run.
Jordan and Lyons combined for 12 of Bloomsburg's opening 15 points, but scoring was scarce overall for the Huskies in the early going. Jordan, Christmas, and
Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) each picked up two fouls in the first 14 minutes of play.
The Huskies closed the first half on a 7-1 run to cut the halftime deficit to nine at 31-22, hoping to use the late run as a spark they could take into the second half.
However, Lincoln opened the second half on a 17-4 second half advantage, building as much as a 22-point lead with 13:42 to play.
The Lions also had four players score in double figures. Led by George Jackson's 17 points and four assists in just 23 minutes, Kenny Sharpe chipped in 13 points and a game-high four steals, as Derrick Washington and Beloved Rogers each scored 12 points.
Rogers, who entered the game just 2-for-12 shooting from three-point range on the season and averaging just three points per game, sank four buckets from long range Wednesday to give the Lions a bevy of options on the offensive end.
Bloomsburg will look to rebound from Wednesday's hopefully short-term setback this weekend as it hosts the PSAC opening weekend. BU will face Slippery Rock on Saturday, Dec. 1 for Alumni Day, and Edinboro on Sunday, Dec. 2 with both game times set for 3 p.m. at Nelson Field House.
