BLOOMSBURG – Daniel Kusnyer (Wexford/Hillsborough CC) and
Nasir Jones (Philadelphia/Franklin Learning Center) scored career-highs in points, but the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team fell to Slippery Rock University, 84-66, at Nelson Field House in its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) game of the season.
Bloomsburg (2-3, 0-1 PSAC) was led offensively by Kusnyer and Jones. Kusnyer hit three shots from beyond the arc and scored 13 points, while Jones added a career-best 11 in the loss. The two players shot a combined 8-of-11 from the field and Bloomsburg tied its season-high of 45.3% shooting while posting a season-best mark of 38.9% from downtown.
Senior
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) had 10 points for the Huskies and hit two three-pointers. Christmas has hit at least one three in 15 consecutive games. He also dished out a team-high four assists in the game.
Freshman
Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy) scored eight points and led the Huskies in rebounding with a career-best seven boards.
Armand Leaks (Philadelphia/The Shipley School) chipped in with six points, four rebounds and a blocked shot.
Slippery Rock (3-1, 1-0 PSAC) was led by junior forward Tabari Perry, who posted game-highs in points and rebounds with 24 and 12, respectively.
The Rock scored the first seven points of the game and wouldn't look back as Bloomsburg never held a lead in the game.
After a Christmas three-pointer and a free throw by
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport), the Huskies cut the Slippery Rock lead to three with 16:46 to play in the first half, but the Rock started to pull away by outscoring Bloomsburg 16-9 over the next six minutes of play.
Starting with a made free throw by
Wes Lyons (Millville/Millville), Bloomsburg went on a 5-0 run that concluded with a steal by Christmas that led to a
Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) layup.
Over the next 6:53, Slippery Rock stretched the gap to 26 points with a 20-7 run. The Rock took their biggest lead of the game with 3:59 to play with a Sa'Quan Davis layup that gave them a 29-point lead.
For the remainder of the game, the Bloomsburg defense did not allow a point, and Jones scored seven points as the Huskies closed the game on an 11-0 run.
Bloomsburg continues PSAC play at home tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 2 with a 3 p.m. matchup against the Edinboro Fighting Scots at Nelson Field House.
