INDIANA – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team fell on the road to 16th-ranked Indiana University (PA), 60-42 Tuesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover matchup at the Kavalchick Complex.
Junior guard
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) scored a team-high 10 points for the Huskies (2-6, 0-4 PSAC). He shot 3-for-8 from the floor and added a three-pointer to extend his streak of consecutive games with a triple to 18.
The Crimson Hawks (7-1, 3-1) used second chance points and offensive rebounds to build its lead. They grabbed 16 offensive boards and turned it into a 14-0 advantage in second chance points.
Bloomsburg succeeded in staying out of foul trouble to keep its best players on the floor Tuesday night, but there just seemed to be a lid on the rim that held it to 31.7 percent shooting from the field.
Redshirt freshman
Wes Lyons (Millville/Millville) and Christmas combined for a pair of layups on Bloomsburg's opening two possessions to take an early 4-0 lead. After a back-and-forth opening five minutes, Christmas buried a three-pointer at the 14:23 mark to give BU a 10-9 lead. Unfortunately, it would be the last time the Huskies held the lead.
IUP got on a roll shortly after the Christmas three with a 22-6 run to take a 15-point, 31-16 lead with 5:46 remaining in the first half. The Huskies turned the ball over 15 times in the opening 20 minutes, which turned into 20 points for the Crimson Hawks to give them a 34-20 advantage at the break.
Freshman
Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy) and senior
Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) combined for six points in the opening five minutes of the second half to cut the IUP lead to 10 at 36-26. It was as close as the Huskies would get to putting together a potential comeback as they shot 26.1 percent and could not connect on 10 three-point attempts in the second half.
Senior Dan Kusnyer scored eight points including a team-high two three-pointers. Haigler had a team-high four assists as Christmas and junior
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) each grabbed a team-best four rebounds.
Sophomore
Zach Sheetz (Landisville/Hempfield) made the most of his time on the floor Tuesday night and scored a career-best six points with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the charity stripe.
IUP's Devante Chance led all scorers with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting including a game-high four three-pointers. Also scoring in double figures for the Crimson Hawks were Marcel Souberbielle and Mathis Keita with 11 apiece. Keita notched a double-double with 11 rebounds as well.
The Huskies return to action tomorrow, Wednesday Dec. 19, and look to get back in the win column as they take on California (PA) in a PSAC contest set to tip at 7:30 p.m.
