HAMPTON, VA—The Bloomsburg University baseball team allowed seven runs in the first three innings as they lost their season opener to the Apprentice School, 7-3. Freshman
Tom Richards (Scranton/West Scranton) went 4-for-5 at the plate and drove in one run in his Bloomsburg debut.
The Huskies kicked off the Apprentice School Builder Invitational by scoring a run in the first inning. With one out,
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) worked a walk but was followed with a fly-out by
Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana). With two outs Ravel stole second before
Nick Eversole would be hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second for the Huskies.
Rookie
Tom Richards (Scranton/West Scranton) stepped to the plate for his first collegiate at bat and would produce a run for the Huskies with a single to left field. The inning would end on the next Husky at bat on a fly out.
The next three innings would prove to be disastrous for the Huskies as they gave up seven runs; two in the first, one in the second, and four in the third inning.
Bloomsburg's bats would be quiet from the second inning to the fourth as they were held to two hits, leaving two men on base. BU would get back on the scoreboard in the fifth inning as
Josh Schroeder (Scranton/West Scranton) scored on a sacrifice fly by Smarrelli. This would be BU's only run of the inning.
In the seventh inning Bloomsburg put run number three on the board on a
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) home run. With two outs in the inning, Bloomsburg had the bases loaded but would fail to bring any runners in as all three were left on base. Neither team scored for the remainder of the game as the Huskies fell, 7-3.
Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) picked up the loss for the Huskies as he gave up three runs, all earned, on five hits in two innings of work.
Matthew Dean (Gilbertsville/Boyertown) had a good showing on the mound as he went 4.2 innings, striking out five batters and allowing no runs.
For the Apprentice School, Daniel Lutz earned the win as he pitched five innings, allowing two runs and struck out two batters. Offensively, Chris Aldridge led the team with his three RBIs while going 3-for-5 at the plate.
Bloomsburg will be back in action tomorrow as the Huskies take on Briarcliff College at 9:00 a.m.
