Men’s Basketball Falls in PSAC Quarterfinals, 83-70

Box Score BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG—The most successful season the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team has had in a decade came to an end today as they fell in the PSAC Quarterfinals to West Chester, 83-70.  Three Huskies finished with double figures with Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) and Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) leading the way with 14 points apiece.

Tonight's PSAC Quarterfinal was Bloomsburg's first playoff appearance since the 2001-02 season.  It was also Bloomsburg's first home playoff game in 13 years.

Bloomsburg got off to another slow to start to today's game as they turned the ball over on their first eight possessions.  The Golden Rams would take advantage of that, going up 8-0 on the Huskies at the first media timeout.

West Chester went ahead 30-15 in the half and led by as many as 18 before entering the break with a 43-32 lead.  Bloomsburg closed the first half on a 7-0 run on two free throws by Christmas, a three pointer by Mike Varanavage (Philadelphia/Archbishop Ryan), and a jump shot by Johnson.

Credit the West Chester defense for their double-digit halftime lead as they forced 11 Bloomsburg turnovers.  Of those 11 turnovers, eight came on West Chester steals.

In the second half, Bloomsburg cut the West Chester lead to nine at the 19:28 mark and the 17:57 mark.  However, the Golden Rams would not crack as they went up by as many as 18 in the half and had their lead hover around 15 points.

With 1:24 remaining Bloomsburg cut the West Chester lead to single digits but it was too little too late as the Huskies fell to the Golden Rams, 83-70.

Johnson and Christmas both finished with 14 points while Johnson dished out an additional five assists.  Larry Webster (Hagerstown, MD/Elkton) was Bloomsburg's other double figure scorer as he chipped in another 10 points along with four blocks.  Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) concluded his night by scoring nine points and grabbing a game high 12 rebounds.

Four West Chester players finished with double figures with Carl Johnson leading all scorers with 19 points.  Lance McDowell contributed a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Jon Breeden was two assists shy of a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.

With today's loss Bloomsburg is eliminated from the 2011-12 PSAC playoffs.
