Baseball Picks up Two Wins against Winston Salem State

CARY, NC—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (8-5) swept a pair of games against Winston Salem State University (15-14) this afternoon.  Bloomsburg blanked the Rams 7-0 in game one then followed it up with another shutout win, 1-0. 

Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) led the way for the Huskies in game one as he went 2-for-4 with one walk and drove in two runs in a 7-0 win. 

Bloomsburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead as the Huskies scored three runs in the top of the second inning.  Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) and Ravel accounted for all three of BU's runs batted in as Smarrelli drove in one and Ravel brought home two. 

Smarrelli drove in another run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly as Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) scored.  Tom Richards (Scranton/West Scranton) also scored on a heads up play on the fly out to put the Huskies up 5-0. 

The Huskies picked up runs in the fifth and ninth innings as they cruised to a 7-0 victory.  Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) threw three innings of shutout ball while striking out five batters.  Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) picked up his first collegiate win as he tossed six scoreless innings and struck out three.  


Game Two Recap
After four scoreless innings, Paul Rosa got things started for the Huskies as he led off the fifth inning with a triple.  On Bloomsburg's next at-bat, Smarrelli singled through the left side of the infield to bring in the game's only run. 

Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) picked up the win as he tossed five scoreless innings, striking out four batters and allowing just two hits.  Gino D'Amato (Hazleton/Hazleton) closed out the game as he threw the final two innings, striking out three and allowing just one batter to reach base as he picked up the save. 

With the two wins Bloomsburg improves to 8-5.  The Huskies will be back at it tomorrow as the Huskies take on Barton College at 2:00 p.m.
