Baseball Splits a Pair of One-Run Games with Millersville

BOX SCORE GAME ONE

BOX SCORE GAME TWO

MILLERSVILLE, PA—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (9-7, 1-1 PSAC East) split a pair of one run games today against the Marauders of Millersville University (11-7, 1-1 PSAC East). Bloomsburg lost game one 2-1 but bounced back in game two for a 5-4 victory.

GAME ONE
Millersville got on the scoreboard first in game one as they took a 1-0 lead in bottom of the fourth inning.  Bloomsburg responded the very next inning with a run of their own as Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) smashed a homerun to lead off the fifth.

Unfortunately for the Huskies it would be their only run of the game, resulting in a 2-1 loss as the Marauders scored their second run in the bottom of the fifth.  Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) was the starter, throwing four innings while striking out one batter.  Smarrelli finished by going 2-for-3 from the plate registering Bloomsburg's only RBI and run scored.

GAME TWO
Bloomsburg jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game two, scoring runs in the second, third, and fifth innings.  Smarrelli had an RBI single in the top of the second inning, scoring Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) singled up the middle to bring in Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) and Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson).  The two runs put the Huskies ahead, 3-0.

Bloomsburg's Eversole found himself at the plate with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the fifth inning.  With a 1-and-2 count, Eversole sent a shot to right field that brought in two runs, giving the Huskies a commanding 5-0 lead.

Millersville cut the Bloomsburg lead to 5-1 with a run in the bottom half of the fifth inning before things got interesting in the bottom of the seventh.

The first five Marauder batters reached base safely to start the bottom of the seventh inning which produced two runs, shaving the Husky lead to 5-3.  Relief pitcher Gino D'Amato (Hazleton/Hazleton) would get the next batter to strike out before Millersville hit a sacrifice fly to get to within one run, 5-4.

However, on a 0-and-1 count, D'Amato would get the Millersville batter to ground into a fielder's choice leading to a 5-4 Bloomsburg win.

Starting pitcher Bryan Morris (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) picked up his third win for the Huskies this season.  Morris went six innings, fanning three Millersville batters en route to the win.  D'Amato struck out on as he picked up his second save of the season.

Kramer, Ravel and Smarrelli each went 2-for-3 from the plate and combined for three RBI's while Ravel scored two of Bloomsburg's five runs.

Bloomsburg will be back at it tomorrow as they take on Millersville in a double-header at Danny Litwhiler Field in Bloomsburg, PA.  Game-one is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
