BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (10-8, 2-2 PSAC East) traded wins in a double header against Millersville University (12-8, 2-2 PSAC East). Bloomsburg fell in game one 8-2 but rallied late in the second game for a 3-2 win.
GAME ONE
Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) doubled to center field, bringing home
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) who walked to lead off the inning. Millersville responded with three runs in the top of the third, taking a 3-1 advantage.
The Huskies trimmed the lead to one in the bottom half of the third inning as Ravel again came up clutch for Bloomsburg with a two-out single that drove in a run. However, Bloomsburg would eventually fall to the Marauders 8-2.
Ravel finished the game by going 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI's with
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) also registering two hits on three plate appearances.
GAME TWO
After four innings of scoreless baseball, Millersville broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth inning. The two Marauder runs came on back-to-back one-out hits.
In the bottom half of the fifth Bloomsburg looked to rally after falling behind 2-0. Meyer set the table for the Bloomsburg bats as he ripped a single into right field on the first pitch of the inning. One batter later
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) reached safely on an error by the Millersville shortstop, putting runners on first and second for the Huskies.
With one out
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) found the gap in left center, driving in both Meyer and Kramer to tie the game at two apiece. Smith would make his way to third on a fielder's choice and on a heads-up play scored on a wild pitch to give the Huskies a 3-2 advantage.
Looking to close the door on the Marauders, senior lefty
Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) came in for relief work in the sixth inning. Voorhees fanned the first two Millersville batters in the inning before getting his third out on a 6-4 fielder's choice.
Unable to score a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Huskies again turned to Voorhees to shut down the Marauder offense. Millersville's Jeff Heisey worked a 3-2 walk to lead off the seventh inning and reached second on sacrifice bunt by Evan King.
During the next at-bat, a passed ball allowed for Heisey to safely reach third base with just one out. Fortunately for the Huskies, Voorhees would get the next batter to ground out to third baseman
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) who threw out the runner for BU's second out of the inning.
Millersville's Zach Stone stepped to the plate with two outs and a man on third, looking to extend the game with an RBI. Stone would take a solid swing, hitting a hard ground ball right back at Voorhees who knocked the ball down before making a timely throw to first to record the final out of today's game.
Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) got the win today as he threw five innings of two-run ball while striking out three batters. Voorhees, who came in for relief work, picked up his first save of his career as he struck out two batters.
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate with three singles while Kramer went 2-for-3. Smith went 1-for-2 with his lone hit being the biggest one in today's game, a two-run double in the fifth.
Bloomsburg will be back in action on Friday, March 23rd as they take on Kutztown University in a PSAC East double-header. The opening pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Danny Litwhiler Field in Bloomsburg, PA.
