BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (11-9, 3-3 PSAC East) traded a pair of wins with the Kutztown Golden Bears (16-5, 4-2 PSAC East) this afternoon.  Bloomsburg fell in game one 3-0 but three RBI by Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) in game two led to a 4-2 win for the Huskies.

GAME ONE
In game one Kutztown's Dominick Russitti tossed a four-hit shutout in beating the Huskies. The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Matt Albaugh singled with one out and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brad Stoudt. Sean McCormick then singled to center scoring Albaugh for Kutztown's first run.

The Huskies threatened in the bottom of the fourth when Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) and Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) both singled and went to second and third on a passed ball. However, Tom Richards (Scranton/West Scranton) grounded out to end the inning keep it a 1-0 game.

Kutztown added a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh. Kyle Stoudt and Brandon Martinez each had run scoring singles in the inning.

Bloomsburg's Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) took the loss despite striking out four and not issuing a walk.

GAME TWO
Bloomsburg opened game two by taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) got things started for BU as he ripped a single into center field on the first pitch he saw.  Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) followed Meyer's hit with an infield single before Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) moved the runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt.

Following a Bloomsburg strikeout, Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) stepped up to the plate with two runners in scoring position with two outs.  Smarrelli came through for the Huskies with a single that brought in both Meyer and Ravel to take a 2-0 lead into the second inning.

Kutztown responded in the top of the second with two runs on a single and a sacrifice fly to even the game at two apiece.  However, a resilient Bloomsburg team pieced together another two run inning in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

Smarrelli came up big for the Huskies yet again as he singled up the middle to bring in his third run of the game, putting BU up 3-2.  One batter later Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) put the Huskies ahead 4-2 as he scored on an error by Kutztown's third baseman.

With a two run lead, Bloomsburg starting pitcher Bryan Morris (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) blanked Kutztown in the fourth and fifth innings.  He would eventually find himself in trouble in the sixth after two errors with two outs loaded the bases.  Fortunately for the Huskies Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) came in to get the next batter to fly out, ending the sixth inning.

Bloomsburg's bats were quieted in the sixth inning resulting in Voorhees taking the mound in the seventh with a 4-2 advantage.  Voorhees closed the door on the Golden Bears as he struck out the leadoff batter and got the next two batters to ground out, leading to a 4-2 Bloomsburg win.

With the win Bloomsburg's Morris improved to 4-1 on the season while Voorhees picked up his second career save.  Morris went 5.2 innings and struck out three batters.

Offensively, it was Smarrelli's day as he went 2-for-2 driving in three runs for the Huskies.  Meyer, Ravel, Kramer, and Smith all scored runs for Bloomsburg.

The Huskies will take on the Golden Bears of Kutztown again on Sunday, March 25th in Kutztown, PA in a 1:00 p.m. double-header.
