Baseball Drops Road Doubleheader to Kutztown

BOX SCORE GAME ONE

BOX SCORE GAME TWO

KUTZTOWN, PA—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (11-11, 3-5 PSAC East) fell in a pair of PSAC East games to the Golden Bears of Kutztown (18-5, 6-2 PSAC East).  A late Bloomsburg rally in game one came up just short as the Huskies lost 5-4 and in game two Bloomsburg conceded a 6-1 decision.

GAME ONE
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) put Bloomsburg ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning on a two-out single to center field  that scored Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson).  Kutztown's Corey Buletza evened things up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first as he scored on a groundout by Travis Kreitz.

After a scoreless inning for the Huskies, the Golden Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a commanding 5-1 lead.  Kutztown scored three of their four runs on a Cody Montz homerun.

Bloomsburg's Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) had a two-out RBI single in the top of the fourth to cut the Kutztown lead to 5-2 and an inning later Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 5-3.  The Huskies would be held scoreless in the top of the sixth but managed to keep Kutztown off the scoreboard as well.

Entering the top of the seventh inning down by two, Bloomsburg's Ravel led off the inning with a single.  Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) and Smith would reach safely on back-to-back one-out singles to load the bases.  Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) came in to pinch hit with the bases juiced and brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to trim the Kutztown lead to just one.

However, Bloomsburg's final batter would go down on strikes leading to a 5-4 loss.  Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) tossed six innings for the Huskies, striking out six batters in the process.  Meanwhile, Ravel went 3-for-4 from the plate scoring two Bloomsburg runs.

GAME TWO
Just like game one, Bloomsburg opened game two by scoring a run in the top of the first inning.  Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) drove in Ravel on a one-out single to put the Huskies on top 1-0.

Kutztown came back and scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead.  However, Bloomsburg had a chance to chip away at the lead as Smith and Smarrelli both reached base safely with just one out.  Unfortunately for the Huskies, Bloomsburg was unable to score any runs in the inning nor the rest of the game as Kutztown went on to win 6-1.

Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) was Bloomsburg's starter as he went five innings while striking out five batters.  Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) came in for relief work as he threw just one inning but struck out three batters.

Bloomsburg will be back on the diamond on Tuesday, March 27th as they host Clarion University in a 1:00 p.m. double-header at Litwhiler Field in Bloomsburg, PA.
