BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (13-11, 3-5 PSAC East) swept a pair of non-conference games this afternoon against the Golden Eagles of Clarion (5-13, 4-4 PSAC West). Bloomsburg thumped Clarion in game one, 16-8 and edged the Golden Eagles by one run in the second game, 6-5.
Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) had a monster day as the senior went 5-for-7 from the plate with seven RBI.
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South),
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) and
Josh Schroeder (Scranton/West Scranton) all scored four runs apiece. Bloomsburg's 16 runs in game one is their most since last year's 16-3 win over Young Harris. The last time BU scored more runs was in a 30-18 loss to Erskine in 2010.
Meanwhile on the mound
Mike Streisel (Tamaqua/Tamaqua Area) fanned six of his first eight batters faced and finished game one with eight strikeouts. Fellow freshman
Jared Schaffer (Perkasie/Pennridge) picked up the win in game two as he threw five strong innings striking out three batters while
Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) recorded his third career save.
GAME ONE
The Huskies went up 2-1 after two innings of play as
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) and
Josh Schroeder (Scranton/West Scranton) drove in runs. Clarion tied things up at two apiece in the top of the fourth inning.
However, Bloomsburg's offense would explode for six runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to give the Huskies a substantial lead.
Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) and
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) both doubled to bring in two runs each in the fourth inning.
In the fifth inning Smarrelli cleared the bases as he smacked a double into left center field that brought in three runs. Following a walk by Kurucz,
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) came in to pinch hit for
Tom Richards (Scranton/West Scranton). Eversole would deliver by sending a shot over the right fielder's head to bring in Smarrelli and Kurucz, putting the Huskies up 14-5.
Bloomsburg allowed three runs in the top of the sixth while the Huskies scored two more in the bottom of the inning en route to a 16-8 win.
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) was credited with the win today as he came in for mid-inning relief, throwing one inning and striking out one batter.
Mike Streisel (Tamaqua/Tamaqua Area) was Bloomsburg's starting pitcher today. The freshman only went 3.1 innings but fanned eight batters in the process including the first six batters he faced.
Smarrelli had a huge game at the plate for the Huskies, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and six RBI.
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) went 1-for-3 but drove in three runs in the process while
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) and
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) each scored three runs apiece.
GAME TWO
The Huskies jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first two innings of play. Kramer drove in the lone run in the first inning on a single to right center field. In the second inning it was Ravel with the big play as he smashed a triple down the right field line that brought in two runs. Ravel would eventually score in the same inning on a Kramer rundown between first and second base.
Clarion picked up two runs in the fourth inning on a Drew Pirritano home run to cut the lead to 4-2. Bloomsburg responded with two runs to go up 6-2 in the bottom half of the inning on a pair of sacrifice flies by Meyer and Smarrelli.
After a scoreless fifth inning by both teams, Clarion's Matt Rossi launched a three-run homer that brought the score to 6-5. In the bottom half of the inning Bloomsburg did not put a runner on base and was held hitless as the Golden Eagles entered the top of the seventh trailing by just one run.
Bloomsburg's
Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) came in to throw the top of the seventh inning. The freshman righty got the first two batters out but walked Jerico Weitzel with two outs. With the go-ahead run at the plate, Bloomsburg turned to senior lefty
Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) to close the door on a Clarion comeback. Voorhees would get the next batter to pop up to second base for the final out, giving BU a 6-5 win.
Freshman starting pitcher
Jared Schaffer (Perkasie/Pennridge) tallied his first collegiate win as he threw five innings of two run ball while striking out three batters. Voorhees was credited with the save for his efforts today. It is his third of the season and his career.
At the plate
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) drove in two of Bloomsburg's five runs as he went 1-for-3. Smarrelli was 2-for-3 with an RBI while Schroeder scored two runs.
Bloomsburg will be back in action this Friday, March 30th as they host the Raiders of Shippensburg University in a double-header. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Litwhiler Field in Bloomsburg, PA.
