BOX SCORE GAME TWO
MASNFIELD, PA—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (20-16, 9-9 PSAC East) split a pair of PSAC East road games with the Mountaineers of Mansfield (10-28, 3-11 PSAC East). Bloomsburg ran away with a 9-2 win in game one but fell the second game 8-4.
GAME ONE
Bloomsburg opened the game by scoring three runs on two outs in the top of the first inning.
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) began the two-out rally with a single up the middle.
Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) kept things going with a single before
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) reached on an error to load the bases.
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) worked a walk to bring in a run which was followed by two-run double by
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), giving the Huskies a 3-0 lead.
The Huskies made it 5-0 the following inning as Kramer singled through the left side of the infield to score
Josh Schroeder (Scranton/West Scranton) and
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville). Mansfield threatened in the bottom of the third as Jeremy Mapstone reached third base with just one out. However, BU starting pitcher
Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) picked-off the runner for the second out of the inning. Nevertheless, the Mountaineers put their next two batters on base but Hunter would get Matt Fisher to ground out to end the inning.
In the fourth, Bloomsburg again worked some two-out magic as they scored four two-out runs.
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) and Kramer each drove in runs in the inning while two others scored on an error by Mansfield's centerfielder.
Mansfield scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth but that would be it as the Huskies would go on to take game one of the doubleheader, 9-2. Hunter recorded the win as he went six innings while allowing two runs. With the win he improves to 2-3 on the season.
Kramer had a huge game at the plate for the Huskies as he went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Smarrelli added another two hits and a pair of runs while Kurucz drove in two on a 1-for-4 day at the plate.
GAME TWO
Bloomsburg wasted no time in the second game of the doubleheader as the Huskies posted two runs in the top of the first. Following a pair of stolen bases by
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) and Ravel, Smarrelli smacked a two-run triple to left field to put BU ahead 2-0.
The Mountaineers responded with four straight runs in the bottom half of the first inning to take a 4-2 advantage. A big hit in the inning was Jon Taddeo's three-run double to right field. Mansfield would go on to score a pair of runs in both the third and fifth innings to claim an 8-2 lead.
In the sixth Bloomsburg cut the lead to 8-3 as Smarrelli scored on a sacrifice fly by Kurucz. The Huskies picked up another run in the bottom of the seventh but that would be it as Bloomsburg fell 8-4.
Bryan Morris (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) got the start today, going four innings with four strikeouts.
Tyler Hill (Lehighton/Lehighton) came in for relief work and threw two innings of one run ball while fanning four Mansfield batters.
At the plate, Smarrelli went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored while Ravel was 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Bloomsburg will be back at it tomorrow as the Huskies host Mansfield in a PSAC East doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Danny Litwhiler Field in Bloomsburg, PA.
