Huskies Record Series Sweep Against Mansfield

BOX SCORE GAME ONE

BOX SCORE GAME TWO

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (22-16, 11-9 PSAC East) swept the Mountaineers of Mansfield (10-30, 3-13 PSAC East) in today's doubleheader.  After running away with an 11-3 win in game one, the Huskies scored four runs in the fifth and sixth to earn a 9-6 victory in the nightcap.

GAME ONE
After two scoreless innings by both teams, the Huskies broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the third.  Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) drove in two runs in the inning as the Huskies scored seven on five hits and capitalized on an error as well as a wild pitch.

Bloomsburg made it 10-0 in the fourth inning as the Huskies scored two of their three runs with two outs.  Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) doubled to bring in BU's eighth run of the game while Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) and Eversole drove in the other two.

The Huskies picked up their final run in the fifth inning as Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) scored on a fielding error by the Mountaineers' short stop.  Mansfield scored three runs in the top of the third but that would be it as the Huskies earned an 11-3 win.

Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) picked up the win as threw six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out four batters.  With the win he improves to 3-0 on the season.

At the plate, Eversole went 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored.  Smarrelli was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) scored two runs as well.

GAME TWO
Mansfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead, scoring all four runs with two outs in the top of the first inning.  The big hit in the inning was Brian Milliman's two-run double to center field that gave the Mountaineers the four run advantage.

Eversole cut the lead to three as he smashed a solo shot to left center field in the bottom of the second inning.  However, the Huskies missed a chance for more runs as they stranded two men on base.

In the third, Bloomsburg took a 5-4 lead by scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Eversole recorded his second RBI of the day as he trimmed the Mansfield lead to 4-2.  Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) tied things at four apiece on a double to left center field that scored Eversole and Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley).  Kurucz scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch to give the Huskies a one run lead.

Two innings later, Mansfield reclaimed the lead as Jon Moser and Jon Taddeo drove in runs for the Mountaineers.  Nevertheless, Bloomsburg rallied for three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to take an 8-6 lead.  Meyer played a large role in the inning as he drove in a run on a two-out triple and scored on the next at-bat on a wild pitch.  Kramer drove home the final run of the inning as he sneaked one through the right side of the infield to make it 8-6.

The Huskies scored an insurance run in the sixth as Eversole singled up the middle to bring home Smith for his third RBI of the game.  This would be all the Huskies needed as they closed out the top of the seventh inning to claim a 9-6 victory.

Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) got the win for the Huskies as he struck out four batters in 2.1 innings of work.  Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) was today's starter, going 4.2 innings with four strikeouts.

Eversole provided the offense for the Huskies as he drove in three runs on a 3-for-4 game at the palte while also scoring two runs himself.  Kurucz finished 1-for-4 with two RBI while Kramer went 3-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI.

Bloomsburg will have some time to rest as they take on Lock Haven in a non-conference doubleheader next Saturday, April 21st.  Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Litwhiler Field in Bloomsburg, PA.
