Huskies Edge Lock Haven 8-6 in Baseball

BOX SCORE

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (23-16, 11-9 PSAC East) picked a win over visiting Lock Haven (15-24-1) today, 8-6.  Bryan Morris (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) came in for relief duty to pick up his team leading sixth win of the season.

Today's doubleheader was not played as scheduled as inclement weather forced a cancellation of game two.  Bloomsburg was leading in the nightcap 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth when the game was eventually cancelled.

In the hours leading up to the game, the Huskies held a charity event for their first annual Best Buddies Day at the Ball Field.  Best Buddies is a worldwide organization that helps promote one-on-one relationships with people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).  The Bloomsburg Best Buddies chapter partnered with Bloomsburg PRSSA and the Bloomsburg University baseball team to put on the event.  Buddies from the organization were VIP's for the day and participated in the opening game ceremonies

Bloomsburg got off to a shaky start in game one as Lock Haven jumped out to an early 5-0 lead.  The Bald Eagles scored two runs in the first and another three in second inning.  A big hit in the second inning for Lock Haven was Scott Zuback's two-run single.

The Huskies picked up two runs in the bottom half of the second inning as Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) drove home two runs on a two-out single to right field.  An inning later Bloomsburg tied things up at 5-5 on a two RBI single from Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana) and a RBI from Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley).

In the following inning, Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) smacked a single up the middle to bring home two runs, scoring Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) and Russell.  With the runs Bloomsburg took their first lead of the game at 7-5.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) put the Huskies up by three on a screamer down the left field line that scored Russell.  The Huskies now led 8-5 entering the top of the seventh.

Lock Haven cut the Bloomsburg lead to two as Zuback smashed a solo shot to left center. However, it would be the only run the Bald Eagles would record as the Huskies went on to claim an 8-6 win.

Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) got the start today for the Huskies, throwing three innings and striking out two batters.  Morris got the win as he tossed four innings of one run ball while fanning two batters.  With the win Morris improves to 6-3 on the season.

At the plate, Kramer went 3-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored.  Ravel went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored while Russell drove home two runs and scored two himself.  Smarrelli finished with two RBI and a run scored.
Bloomsburg's next contest is scheduled for tomorrow, April 22nd as the Huskies travel to take on Lock Haven in a non-conference doubleheader.  Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Lock Haven, PA.
