Late Rally by Baseball Comes Up Short in Doubleheader Sweep

BOX SCORE GAME ONE

BOX SCORE GAME TWO

BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (24-19, 11-11 PSAC East) dropped a pair of PSAC East games this afternoon to no. 17 West Chester (31-8, 15-7 PSAC East).  A late Bloomsburg rally came up just short in game one as the Huskies fell 9-8 and in game two West Chester claimed a 7-2 victory.

Prior to today's games, Bloomsburg honored their five seniors for their contributions to the Bloomsburg University baseball program.  The five Huskies were Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton), Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain), Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South), Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana), and Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury).

GAME ONE
West Chester jumped out to a 5-0 lead as they scored two runs in the first inning and three runs in the third.  Bloomsburg's Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) cut the lead to three as he smacked a two-run shot to right center field, scoring Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville).  Ravel's homer was his first of his collegiate career.

The following inning, West Chester took an 8-2 lead on a three-run blast from Joe Wendle.  In the bottom half of the inning, Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) snuck a single through the left side of the infield to bring home a run and cut the West Chester lead to 8-3.  However, Wendle smashed a solo shot in the top of the seventh to put the Golden Rams up 9-3.  He finished the day by going 4-for-4 with three homers and six RBI.

Down by six runs, the Huskies looked to rally in the bottom of the seventh as their first three runners reached safely.  With no outs, Ravel slapped a hit down the right field line.  The hit would clear the bases as a hustling Ravel made his way home for an inside the park homer, trimming the lead to 9-8.

Trailing by a run with no outs, the Huskies eyed the win but Kyle Weary would record the last three outs, striking out two of Bloomsburg's next three batters to give West Chester the 9-8 win.

Ravel finished the day by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a career high six RBI.  Kurucz also had a solid day at the plate with two hits, one run scored, and an RBI.

GAME TWO
The Huskies kept the West Chester bats quiet for the first three innings but in the fourth, the Golden Rams struck for six runs to take a 6-0 lead.  West Chester picked up another run in the top of the fifth to go up 7-0 on a Mike Raimo RBI single.

Bloomsburg's Paul Rosa IV (Wyomissing/Wilson) opened the sixth inning with a triple which eventually led to a run scored as Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) drove him in.  The Huskies picked up another run in the bottom seventh as Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) singled to center field, scoring Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain).  Unfortunately for the Huskies, it would be their final run of the day as they fell 7-2.

Meyer, Kramer, Eversole and Rosa all finished with one hit apiece.  Meyer and Eversole also had one RBI while Kramer and Rosa scored Bloomsburg's runs.

With the two losses, Bloomsburg dropped to fifth place in the PSAC East standings, sitting behind Millersville.  The Huskies will have two games tomorrow against West Chester to make-up some ground lost today as they search for their second consecutive postseason berth.  Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in West Chester, PA.
