BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (17-15, 6-8 PSAC East) split a PSAC East doubleheader this afternoon with the Warriors of East Stroudsburg (19-12, 4-6 PSAC East). Bloomsburg lost game one 7-4 in extra innings but rallied late in game two for a 4-3 win.
GAME ONE
Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) singled up the middle to bring home
Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana). The lead was short lived as the Warriors scored four runs on three hits in the top of the third to take a 4-1 advantage.
Looking to chip away at the lead, Bloomsburg's
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) smashed a two-out triple in the fourth to set up an RBI single by
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South) which cut the lead to 4-2.
The Huskies would eventually tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth inning as Kurucz smacked a two run single to right field. Neither team would score in the sixth or seventh as extra innings were needed to decide the outcome of the game.
After throwing seven innings, BU starter
Kyle Hunter (Lehighton/Lehighton) took a seat while reliever
Matt Kline (Sugarloaf/Hazleton) took the mound for the eighth. East Stroudsburg would go on to score three runs in the extra inning to win 7-4.
Hunter went seven innings, striking out three batters and allowed three earned runs. At the plate, Kurucz had a great day, going 2-for-4 with three RBI
GAME TWO
After giving up a run in the top of the second, Bloomsburg responded with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to tie things up at 1-1. Bloomsburg's Smarrelli scored in the inning on a balk.
East Stroudsburg came back with a two-run third inning to go up 3-1 but just like game one a resilient Bloomsburg club would not go away. Slowly but surely the Huskies orchestrated a comeback, scoring a run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
Bloomsburg's run in the fourth was a result of a wild pitch and BU's run in the fifth came as
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. With the game tied at 3-3, Meyer ripped a single into left field that brought home a sprinting Kurucz from second base to take a 4-3 edge.
With the one run lead Bloomsburg put the ball back in hands of their starter,
Bryan Morris (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic), who had allowed just one earned run up until to that inning. Morris took the mound and confidently retired the first three batters he faced to give Bloomsburg a 4-3 win.
Morris threw a complete game, striking out five batters and allowing just one earned run. With the win he improves to 5-2 on the season. At the plate Meyer was 2-for-4 with his last hit being the eventual game winner.
The Huskies will be back in action tomorrow, April 7th as they travel to take on East Stroudsburg in another doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
