BLOOMSBURG—The Bloomsburg University baseball team (19-15, 8-8 PSAC East) swept the Warriors of East Stroudsburg University (19-14, 4-8 PSAC East) in a PSAC East doubleheader this afternoon. Bloomsburg won game one 6-4 in 10 innings and earned an 8-3 win in game two.
Today's pair of games was East Stroudsburg's Military Appreciation Day in which all individuals and family members affiliated with military or uniformed service personnel gathered for the day on East Stroudsburg's campus. The day included a large flag that was unveiled in the outfield during the national anthem prior to game one. Members of the Bloomsburg University baseball team, Operation Touch of Home, ESU ROTC, and the police and fire departments of East Stroudsburg and Stroudsburg all participated in the pre-game ceremony.
GAME ONE
In game one Bloomsburg scored three runs in the top of the third inning.
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) put the first two runs on the board as he drove in two runs on a two-out single that scored
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) and
Josh Schroeder (Scranton/West Scranton).
Jarrod Kramer (Orwigsburg/Blue Mountain) made it 3-0 with an RBI double that brought home
Keith Meyer (Richboro/Council Rock South).
The Huskies held the 3-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh inning when the Warriors scored three of their own to force extra innings. East Stroudsburg almost came away with the win in the eighth inning as they put runners on second and third with two out. However, freshman
Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) got out of the inning as he retired ESU's Eric Boyer.
In the top of the ninth Bloomsburg's Ravel made his way to third base with two outs but the Warriors would get a strikeout to end the threat. Nevertheless, Bloomsburg rallied to score three two-out runs in the 10th to take a 6-3 lead. A big hit in the inning was Meyer's two-run triple.
The Warriors threatened in the bottom half of the inning as they scored a run with one out to make it 6-4 and loaded the bases with two outs. Though, Heane again came through for the Huskies as he got ESU's Chris Knott to fly out to right field.
Heane picked up his second win of the season by tossing four innings of one run ball. He also struck out two batters.
Vinny Voorhees (New Hope/New Hope Solebury) was the starter for the Huskies. The senior lefty went six plus innings striking out three batters.
At the plate Bloomsburg's Meyer and Ravel both drove in two runs apiece while Meyer scored another. Kramer went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
GAME TWO
In the second game of the doubleheader, Bloomsburg took a 1-0 lead in the third inning only to see it get tied at 1-1 in the bottom half. An inning later the Huskies took back their one run lead as Kramer scored on an East Stroudsburg throwing error to bring the score to 2-1.
Bloomsburg opened the game up in the fifth inning as they scored five runs to take a 7-1 lead. Four of BU's five runs were scored on doubles by
Vince Smarrelli (Mt. Airy, MD/Urbana),
Nickolas Eversole (Lewistown/Indian Valley), and Kramer. Russell drove in the fifth and final run of the inning to give the Huskies a six run advantage.
The Huskies gave up two runs in the sixth and scored one of their own in the seventh as they went on to win 8-3. Bloomsburg starter
Casey Cooperman (Allentown/Parkland) went the distance as he tossed a complete game for his third win of the year. Cooperman allowed just one earned run while striking out two batters.
Just like in game one Kramer went 3-for-4 at the plate giving him six hits on the day. He also drove in a run and scored two himself. Smarrelli was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Smarrelli leads the Huskies with 27 RBI this season.
Bloomsburg will be back in action on Wednesday, April 11th as they host Lincoln University in the non-conference doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Litwhiler Field in Bloomsburg, PA.
