FRIDAY HEAT SHEETS
BLOOMSBURG—Bloomsburg University will be the site of the 2012 PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Championships Thursday, May 3 through Saturday, May 5 at Robert B. Redman Stadium.
Action for the close to 700 entrants will get underway on Thursday at 11 a.m. with the start of the men's decathlon, while the women's heptathlon will start at 11:30 a.m. At 8 p.m the men's 10,000-meter final will be conducted with the women's 10,000 meter final starting at 8:45 p.m. Admission on Thursday is free for everyone.
On Friday at 10 a.m. the decathlon will finish with the women's heptathlon will start at 10:30 a.m. Field events will start at noon on Friday, while track events start at 1 p.m. Admission to the track events is $7 for adults and $2 for students/seniors with any student from a PSAC school getting free admission with a valid ID.
Shippensburg is the PSAC defending champions in both the men's and women's action. The Raiders are seeking their fourth straight crown, while the Lady Raiders are trying to make it three straight.
In all, four women will be returning to defend PSAC titles, while in the men's competition seven individuals will be vying to defend their PSAC titles.
For the women, Kelly Fischer from Slippery Rock is the returning champ in the pole vault, while April Doyle won last year's shot put. Alexandra Arnold of Slippery Rock is the defending javelin champion, while Caitlin Stuetz of Shippensburg is the defending champion in the 100-meter hurdles.
On the men's side, Brice Myers from California, Pa. is the defending champ in the 110-meter hurdles and has run the top time in all of Division II this season to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA championships.
In addition Slippery Rock's Kevin Jewel is the returning champ in the 800 meters, while Kori Meshaw from Kutztown will try to defend his title in the 400-meter hurdles. In the triple jump IUP's Brandon Ford is a returning champ, while in the 1500 meter run Matt Gillette is the defending champion. The final PSAC champion that returns this year is Ben Hahn of Edinboro in the 5000 meter run.
For the host Huskies, Bloomsburg has 20 qualifiers on the men's side for the championships, including
Justin Shirk (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin), the top seed in the javelin. Shirk has already earned an automatic bid to the NCAA championships. He improved his mark in the javelin throw on Friday at the Bloomsburg Maroon and Gold Invitational with a throw of 216'. Shirk is now fourth in Division II and leads the PSAC by four inches.
On the women's side, the Huskies have 20 qualifiers led by
Katie Filemyr (Willow Grove/Bishop McDevitt) who ran the second fastest time this season in the 3000-meter steeplechase with a mark of 10:49.69. The time is also an NCAA provisional qualifying time. Filemyr also ran the fourth fastest time in the conference this season in the 1500.
