CHEYNEY—The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team lost to Cheyney University, 72-54, on Saturday in a PSAC (Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference) Eastern Division matchup.
The Wolves held the early edge in the game jumping out to leads of 16-5 and 21-8 in the first 10 minutes of action. Bloomsburg, playing without two starters out with injuries, rallied behind the shooting of
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) and
Nasir Jones (Philadelphia/Franklin Learning Center). Christmas hit a pair of three-pointers and added a free throw, while Jones hit a layup and a free throw as the Huskies tied the score at 21-all with 6:48 to go in the half.
Cheyney though closed the half outscoring the Huskies 8-5 to lead 29-26 at the break.
In the second half the Wolves used a 15-2 run in the first six minutes of play to lead 44-28. Bloomsburg was able to briefly trim the deficit to 52-40 using a 6-0 run. Newcomer
Jimel Calliste (Brooklyn, NY/Thomas Jefferson Campus) scored four of the points as the Huskies got to within 12 with 6:43 to play.
But that would be as close as the Huskies would get as the Wolves built the lead up to as many as 21 points before settling for the 18 point victory.
Christmas finished with a game-high 28 points, while Jones finished with seven points and five rebounds.
Cheyney, 6-9, 4-7 in the PSAC East, got 21 points from Deshawn Curtis, 20 from Rashaad Slappy and 17 from Brandon Norfleet.
The Huskies, 4-11, 2-9 in the PSAC East, will play at Mansfield on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
