Calliste Banks in Game-Winner in Double Overtime Victory at Mansfield

Box Score HTML Boxscore

MANSFIELD – Jimel Calliste (Brooklyn, NY/Thomas Jefferson Campus) made the game-winning jumper with 5.3 seconds remaining in the second overtime period as the Bloomsburg University men's basketball team earned an 82-81 victory on the road against Mansfield University Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at Decker Gymnasium.

Calliste hasn't wasted any time making an impact after joining the Huskies (5-11, 3-9 PSAC) just one week ago.  Given the ball with under 10 seconds to play and Bloomsburg trailing Mansfield (5-11, 3-9) 81-80, Calliste found the energy to drive the lane, pull up for a shot from the left side, and bank in a floater to give the Huskies their second, double overtime victory of the season.

The redshirt-sophomore point guard also made the game-tying jumper with 57 seconds left in the first overtime to tie the game at 75 and eventually send the game to its second extra period.  Calliste finished with 10 points, six of which came in the two overtime periods, in his third game in the maroon and gold.  He shot 4-for-6 from the field and made both of his free throws.

Freshmen Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy) and Wes Lyons (Millville/Millville) played vital roles in making some tough shots in the final minutes of regulation to give Bloomsburg a chance in overtime.  Haigler notched the first double-double of his young career with a 13-point, career-high 10-assist performance.  He played 44 minutes and also made three steals.

Lyons returned from his injury and scored 14 points on 6-for-13 shooting from the field with four rebounds, but fouled out of the game with 1:19 to play in regulation.  The duo of Haigler and Lyons scored Bloomsburg's final 12 points in regulation.

With the game tied at 68 with 24.5 seconds left in regulation, Bloomsburg had the ball coming out of a timeout. Haigler found down the clock to under 10 seconds, but was stripped driving into the paint by Mansfield's Kenny Johnson to force overtime.

Down by four in the first overtime, Bloomsburg's Kendal Smith (Waldorf, MD/Thomas Stone) drained his first three-pointer of the season to bring the Mansfield lead to one at 74-73 with 1:17 to play.  Smith fouled out the following possession but finished with a career-high-tying 10 points.

Mansfield converted on one of two free throws after the Smith foul, which allowed Calliste to tie the game with a jumper from the right side with 49.1 seconds to play in overtime.

Like at the end of regulation, Haigler got the call for the potential game-winning shot at the end of the first overtime.  The freshman missed with 10 seconds to play as Mansfield grabbed the rebound and called timeout with 3.9 seconds left, but was unable to get a shot off.

With Bloomsburg trailing by four with 2:16 to play in the second overtime, Calliste drained a jumper and was followed on Bloomsburg's next possession by a Nasir Jones (Philadelphia/Franklin Learning Center) and-one opportunity off a reverse layup.  He converted on the free throw to bring the Huskies within one at 81-80 with 1:55 to play.

Bloomsburg junior center Moustapha Noumbissi (Upper Darby/Delaware County Christian School) blocked Mansfield Kevonte McClain's layup attempt the next possession to give the Huskies the ball down 81-80 with 18.5 seconds to play.  Calliste then drove the lane in the final moments and made the game-winning jumper with 5.3 seconds left.  Mansfield's Chuck Harper missed a long three-pointer at the buzzer.

Sophomore Zach Sheetz (Landisville/Hempfield) scored a team-high 15 points off five three-pointers for Bloomsburg.  Both of which tied a career-high he previously set against Mercyhurst.

The Mountaineers were led by Kenny Johnson's 18 points. Also scoring in double figures for Mansfield were Charles Becoats (15), Onyema Utti (12), McClain (11), Joe Bell (10), and Tremaine (10).  For the game, Mansfield shot a higher percentage from three-point range (47.6) than it did from the field (42.4).

Bloomsburg shot 48.4 percent from the field, its second best mark of the season.  Its top shooting performance came in its double overtime victory against Lock Haven (50.0).  The Huskies also out-scored the Mountaineers by a wide margin in the paint, 38-18.

Mansfield opened the game with three straight three-pointers to hold an early 9-0 lead.  Sheetz stepped up for the Huskies and scored nine of the team's next 11 points to trail 12-11 at the 11:44 mark of the first half.

Midway through the first half, Haigler stole the ball off Becoats, passed it forward to Smith who jammed it home to give Bloomsburg its first lead of the game at 15-14 to cap a 15-5 run after trailing 9-0.

With Bloomsburg leading 21-20, Mansfield went on an 11-1 run in just one minute, 43 seconds to take its largest lead of the game at nine, 31-22.  The Huskies showed some poise in the final minutes, however, and ended the half on a 10-3 run as the Mounties held a 34-32 lead at the break.

A significant difference maker in the opening 20 minutes was the Mountaineers performance from three-point range.  Mansfield shot 62 percent, 8-for-13 from beyond the arc including three by Becoats and two by Johnson, who led the team with 10 points at halftime.  Nine of Mansfield's first 12 made field goals were three-pointers.

Bloomsburg also shot well from three-point range in the first half (66.7 percent), but only made four three-pointers compared to Mansfield's eight.

The Huskies regained the lead during a 9-0 run over 2:23 midway through the second half.  However, after leading 46-43, Mansfield went on a 12-4 run to hold a 55-50 lead with 9:20 to play.  It was the largest lead the Mountaineers would hold for the remainder of the game.

Bloomsburg returns home and looks to build off its dramatic double overtime victory on Saturday, Jan. 26 when it hosts West Chester University (11-5, 9-3) at Nelson Field House beginning at 3 p.m.  Saturday's game will mark Bloomsburg's 'Play 4 Kay' game to raise awareness of breast cancer.
