Men’s Basketball Returns to Nelson Saturday to Host West Chester

BLOOMSBURG – To describe the Bloomsburg University men's basketball teams' double overtime win at Mansfield Wednesday night as 'big' would be an understatement.  Looking to build some momentum, the Huskies return home for two straight games against two of the top programs in the Eastern Division.

The Huskies (5-11, 3-9 PSAC) moved up to fifth in the East with its 82-81 win over Mansfield and host second place West Chester University (11-5, 9-3) Saturday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division clash at Nelson Field House beginning at 3 p.m.

The game will be broadcast live on WHLM (930-AM) based out of Bloomsburg with Jim Doyle and Larry White calling all the action. In addition, listeners throughout the world can listen to the game live on BU's website at www.buhuskies.com. The pre-game show will begin 20 minutes before tipoff.

Saturday will also mark Bloomsburg's 'Play 4 Kay' game to raise awareness of and promote breast cancer research.  Everyone is encouraged to wear pink to the event.  Read more about the 'Play 4 Kay' event by clicking here.

Jimel Calliste (Brooklyn, NY/Thomas Jefferson Campus)'s game-winning jumper at Mansfield Wednesday night snapped a two-game skid for the Huskies.  It also gave Bloomsburg the advantage in a possible tiebreaker scenario for playoff seeding for the PSAC Tournament in March.  A win Saturday would only improve the Huskies chances to make their second consecutive trip to the postseason.

To do so, however, Bloomsburg will need to take its season one game at a time and start by trying to take down a West Chester team that ended its season a year ago.  West Chester has won the last three matchups after Bloomsburg had won the previous three.  West Chester swept the season series last year including in the PSAC Quarterfinals, 83-70.  However, both regular season matchups last season were decided by six points or less.

If Saturday's game goes over 40 minutes, it could favor the Huskies.  In the last two seasons, Bloomsburg is 7-1 in overtime games.  Three of its five victories this season have come in overtime, and BU's top FG percentages came in its double overtime victories against Lock Haven (.500) and at Mansfield (.484).

Freshman Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy) is coming off his first career double-double and will need to make effective decisions at the point guard position to take down the Golden Rams.  He scored 13 points and dished out a career-high 10 assists against Mansfield, marking the first double-double by a point guard this season and first since Trevon Johnson (Snow Hill, MD/Snow Hill) had two last season.

For the season, Haigler is second on the team at 11.9 points per game. He averages 4.4 assists per game for third in the PSAC, and is sixth in the PSAC with 1.8 steals per game.

Another pleasant surprise of late for the Huskies has been sophomore shooting guard Zach Sheetz (Landisville/Hempfield).  Sheetz has made a three-pointer in each of his seven games started this season.  47 of his 51 shots (92.16 percent) have come from three-point range, and he is already second on the team in three-pointers made (21) while leading the team in three-point percentage (.447).  Sheetz is averaging 8.8 points per game for third on the team.

West Chester is coming off a 74-57 win at Shippensburg Wednesday evening.  Jon Breeden scored a season-high 18 points and Jaleel Mack added a season-best 16 points. Breeden posted a double-double with 10 rebounds. Troy Hockaday had eight points, seven rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Harley Williamson contributed 13 points in the win.

After its game against West Chester, Bloomsburg remains in divisional play and hosts top seeded East Stroudsburg Wednesday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. at Nelson Field House.
