MATCH NOTES
BLOOMSBURG--The Bloomsburg University wrestling team, fresh off its championship at the Brute Invitational last week, will host the 20th-ranked University of Maryland Terrapins on Saturday, Jan. 5 at 5 p.m. at the Nelson Field House.
The Huskies, 7-2, won five individual titles at the Brute Invitational with
Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) winning at 133 pounds;
Frank Hickman (Castle Hayne, NC/E.A. Laney) at 157;
Josh Veltre (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) at 165;
Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown) at 197 and
Justin Grant (Easton/Easton) at 285.
Wilcox surrended just three points in winning his title, while Hickman scored one win by fall and three by major decision. Both Perry and Grant won two of their three matches by fall with Grant winning the title with a first period pin.
Along with five champions at the Brute Invitational the Huskies claimed six other placewinners.
Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks) (125) was third;
Matt Rappo (Holland/Council Rock South) (141) was third;
Kevin Hartnett (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) (165) was third;
Chris Smith (Mineral, Va./Chancelor) (174) took third; and
Andre Petroski (Glenn Mills/Springfield) (184) was fifth.
Maryland, 6-3 in dual competition, is coming off a 20th-place team finish at the Midlands Tournament for head coach Kerry McCoy with junior Jimmy Sheptock finishing fifth at 184-pounds. In addition, the Terps had five wrestlers place at the 80th annual Wilkes Open led by individual championships for 285-pound Spencer Myers and 125-pound Paul O'Neill.
Maryland also competed at the Grapple at the Garden in mid-December losing to Ohio State, 34-3, and beating Nebraska, 18-17.
The Terps have four wrestlers ranked in this week's Intermat rankings led by sixth-ranked Josh Asper and seventh-ranked Jimmy Sheptock. Back on Dec. 18 Sheptock was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week after he won two matches in the Grapple at the Garden, including a 6-4 sudden victory over then-sixth ranked Josh Ihnen of Nebraska to key a Maryland comeback against the 17th-ranked Huskers.
