EDINBORO, Pa. – A second half surge from Edinboro sent the host Fighting Scots past the Bloomsburg men's basketball team, 70-61, on Tuesday evening at McComb Fieldhouse in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover game.
The loss ends Bloomsburg's six-game winning streak and moves the Huskies record to 6-2 on the season. Edinboro improves to 5-3.
The teams battled to a draw during the opening 20 minutes, exchanging the lead seven times and sharing eight ties. Bloomsburg seized early momentum, grabbing an eight point lead with 11:28 left in the period, but Edinboro quickly pulled even and the teams would head to the locker room tied at 31.
The back-and-forth action continued throughout the first part of the second half with the Huskies taking a 40-39 lead following a 3-pointer from
Zach Sheetz (Landisville/Hempfield). Edinboro responded with a 10-0 run, however, to take the game's largest lead at 49-40 with 7:40 left to play.
Bloomsburg had a rally left, closing to within four (54-50) following a layup from
Andrew Morgan (New Brunswick, NJ/St. Joseph's) with still 4:11 remaining. The Fighting Scots snuffed out the rally effort, however, answering with back-to-back 3-pointers by Johnathan Logan and Jonny Marsh to stretch the lead to 10 once more. The Huskies chipped to within 65-56 with a minute to play, but the Fighting Scots managed to make their free throws down the stretch to maintain their advantage.
Alssene Saintilus (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) and
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) each scored 12 points to pace the Huskies while Saintilus also led Bloomsburg on the boards with eight rebounds. Morgan tied a career-high with nine points and also added four assists.
Jon Riles (Philadelphia/Academy of the New Church) pitched in nine points and five rebounds.
Bryan Theriot led all scorers with 19 points and six rebounds for the Fighting Scots and Logan added 17 points and eight boards.
Bloomsburg has an opportunity to quickly bounce back as it travels to Mercyhurst for a Wednesday evening contest. The PSAC crossover game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.
