BLOOMSBURG – The Bloomsburg University men's basketball team used a second half burst to power past Cheyney, 72-57, for its fifth straight win on Wednesday night at Nelson Field House.
The Huskies (5-1, 3-0 PSAC East) outscored Cheyney 26-12 over the final seven minutes to erase a halftime deficit and put away what had been a close game until the waning minutes. Cheyney (1-6, 1-2) took a 27-24 leadinto intermission and held its edge until
Alssene Saintilus (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) gave the Huskies their first lead on a free throw shot nearly two minutes into the second period.
Saintilus would be the difference on the night for Bloomsburg as the junior matched his career high of 19 points – 10 of which came during the second half.
Cheyney grabbed a three-point lead on a free throw from Deshawn Curtis with 11:26 to play, but it turned out to be the final advantage for the visitors.
Lorenzo Christmas (Norristown/Norristown) quickly tied the game with a 3-pointer on the other end for the sixth tie of the contest and
Charles Haigler (Charles Town, WV/Hargrave Military Academy) gave the Huskies a lead they would not relinquish with his lay in at the 10:07 mark. The Wolves got as close as a point (46-45) with 7:21 remaining on the layup from Khalil Meadows, but
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) began the Huskies' final push with a shot from beyond the arc. Three minutes later Bloomsburg's lead was double digits and it would not look back.
Three players worked into double figure scoring for Bloomsburg – joining Saintilus were Christmas and
Wes Lyons (Millville/Millville) who had 10 points apiece. Christmas also paced the Huskies on the boards with a team-high seven rebounds.
Jon Riles (Philadelphia/Academy of the New Church) facilitated the offense by handing out five assists along with three steals and six points.
Curtis was the standout player for Cheyney, finishing with a game-high 27 points and 12 rebounds.
Bloomsburg returns to action on Saturday at Shippensburg, continuing PSAC East play with a 3 p.m. tipoff.
GAME NOTES: The Huskies held a 36-35 edge in rebounding … Saintilus tallied his best offensive effort as a Husky, matching the 19 points he had for Chestnut Hill vs. Holy Family in 2012 … Bloomsburg shot over 46 percent from the floor (24-of-52) while holding Cheyney to 38 percent (20-52) …Bloomsburg committed only 10 turnovers while forcing Cheyney into 17 which resulted into 22 points of offense for BU ... the Huskies have their first five-game winning streak since a seven-game streak between Nov. 16-Dec. 4, 2011 … Bloomsburg improved to 4-0 at Nelson Field House.
