SCOUTING SHIPPENSBURG
The Raiders have started the season at 1-4, but recently snapped a four-game losing streak with a 70-64 win at Chestnut Hill in their last time out on Nov. 30. Shippensburg is 0-3 on its home floor after losses to Alderson-Broaddus (66-57), Shepherd (86-73) and Lock Haven (78-61) as well as a defeat at Cheyney (78-62). Shippensburg was picked to finish ninth in the PSAC Eastern Division Preseason Coaches Poll after going 7-20 and 5-17 in the PSAC last season. The Raiders are buoyed by returning four starters from a year ago – senior center Dylan Edgar, junior guard Sam Pygatt and sophomores Tony Ellis and Joe Lococo.
Players to Watch
Joe Lococo, sophomore guard – Lococo was named PSAC East Men's Athlete of the Week on Dec. 2 after scoring a game-high 27 points to lead the Raiders to their first win of the season at Chestnut Hill. He shot 5-of-9 from the floor and 14-of-16 from the free throw line. He has scored in double figures four times and averaged 17.8 points per game.
Abe Massaley, freshman guard – Massaley has impressed in his Shippensburg debut, averaging 13.4 points and 3.4 rebounds through five games. He's been in double figures four times including a career-high 19 points vs. Cheyney on Nov. 23.
THE BLOOMSBURG-SHIPPENSBURG SERIES
Bloomsburg leads, 102-63
Bloomsburg has the all-time upper hand in the long-running series which dates back to the 1910-11 season when Shippensburg won the first-ever meeting, 33-9. Shippensburg swept the season series last year, however, after Bloomsburg won both games during the 2011-12 campaign.
WHEN LAST WE MET
Bloomsburg led at halftime, but Shippensburg would score a 68-59 win in the last meeting between teams on Feb. 13, 2013 at Heiges Field House.
Dontahe Jordan (Williamsport/Williamsport) scored a game-high 22 points while the Raiders put three players in double figures led by 18 from Tyhiem Perrin.
WIN STREAK STILL ALIVE
The Huskies enter Saturday's game riding a five-game winning streak to move to 5-1 on the season. It is the Huskies' first five-game winning streak since winning seven straight between Nov. 16-Dec. 4, 2011.
DE-FENSE
Bloomsburg held an opponent under 60 points for the second straight game in its 72-57 win over Cheyney on Wednesday. The Huskies have limited the opposition to less than 70 points four times. In all, the Huskies rank fourth in the PSAC in defense while allowing only 66.5 points per game. Gannon ranks first at 57.4 points per game allowed, but the Huskies are the top defensive team thus far in the East as Western Division members IUP and Mercyhurst are second and third overall.
PROTECT THE ROCK
The Huskies committed a season-low 10 turnovers in Wednesday's victory vs. Cheyney. It represented the fewest turnovers in a game by BU since committing only eight vs. Kutztown on Feb. 23, 2013.
SECOND HALF STRENGTH
Bloomsburg has saved its best basketball for the second half this season – trailing at halftime has not hurt the Huskies as they are 3-1 when trailing at halftime, including coming back to erase halftime deficits in the past two wins.
SAINTILUS SHINES
Junior forward
Alssene Saintilus (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) re-joined the starting lineup for the second time this year on Wednesday and powered the Huskies' win over Cheyney by matching his career high of 19 points. It matched a total he reached while at Chestnut Hill vs. Holy Family on Jan. 23, 2012 and established a new high while wearing maroon and gold. He's come alive as of late, averaging 16.3 points per game over the last three contests.
