HAMPTON, VA – Senior right-hander
Bryan Morris (Bethlehem/Bethlehem Catholic) had a career-high eight strikeouts and allowed two hits in six innings of work as the Bloomsburg University baseball team took down Lock Haven University 9-3 Friday night at War Memorial Stadium.
After allowing one hit in the first inning, Morris only allowed one base runner over the next four innings. He had two strikeouts in the third and struck out the side in the fifth. Including two to start the sixth, Morris struck out five consecutive batters. It was Morris' fourth career outing of pitching six or more innings.
Sophomore
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) scored a career-high four runs with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate with an RBI. It was Ravel's second three-hit game of his career.
A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) and
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) had multi-hit games for the Huskies (2-1). As a team, Bloomsburg recorded a season-high 12 hits.
The Huskies took an early lead with three runs in the first inning. Ravel was hit by a pitch to start the game and eventually scored off an error by the Lock Haven third baseman. With two outs,
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) scored all the way from first base off a passed base and throwing error by the catcher, and junior
Tim Kurucz (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) hit an RBI single to give the Huskies an early 3-0 advantage.
Lock Haven committed two fielding errors in the inning that led to the three Bloomsburg runs, two of which were unearned.
Ravel used his speed to plate Bloomsburg's fourth run. He singled to right field, stole second base, and advanced to third on a passed ball. He scored the following at-bat as Stump hit an infield single to score Ravel from third. Lock Haven's fourth error of the night allowed for Stump to score from second later that inning.
Freshman
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) hit a two RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to score Ravel and junior
Aaron Russell (Montoursville/Montoursville) and give Bloomsburg a 7-0 lead.
Junior right-hander
Gino D'Amato (Hazleton/Hazleton) took over for Morris with a seven-run cushion in the seventh. Almand picked up an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to give Bloomsburg an 8-0 lead. D'Amato retired four straight batters, but let up three runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 8-3.
After Ravel collected his third hit of the day with an RBI single in the eighth, sophomore
Cody Heane (McClure/Indian Valley) came in to pitch the ninth. He let up a leadoff single and then walked the bases loaded. Heane struck out the next batter and then forced Lock Haven's pinch-hitter to hit into a game-ending double play.
Parker Watson picked up the loss for the Bald Eagles. In 4.1 innings, he allowed seven runs, three earned, with four strikeouts. Jay Hartman went 2-for-4 with an RBI from the leadoff spot to lead Lock Haven at the plate.
Bloomsburg returns to action on day three of the Builder Invitational when it takes on Kutztown University on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 3 p.m.
