HAMPTON, VA – The Bloomsburg University baseball team jumped out to an early lead and had tremendous pitching contributions in a 6-1 win over Briarcliffe College Friday morning in the opening game of day two of the Builder Invitational at War Memorial Stadium.
Junior right-hander
Eric Geedey (Elverson/Twin Valley) got the start and picked up the win for the Huskies (1-1). He didn't allow a hit through the first four innings before allowing a leadoff single in the fifth inning. He allowed one unearned run over 5.1 innings off one hit with one strikeout. It is a career-high in innings for Geedey and his first start in which he did not allow any earned runs.
Junior
Brad Smith (Morgantown/Twin Valley) and freshman
Joey Casselberry (Eagleville/Methacton) had multi-hit games for Bloomsburg. Sophomore
Tim Ravel (Sinking Spring/Wilson) had two RBI from the leadoff spot as the Huskies tallied nine hits while only allowing two.
Bloomsburg struck first with three runs in the second inning. With two men in scoring position, Ravel hit a single up the middle to score both runners. Junior
Nick Mazza (Carbondale/Carbondale) scored on a throwing error by the Briarcliffe first baseman for BU's third run of the inning.
Sophomore
A.J. Stump (Reading/Antietam) hit an RBI single to left field in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. Stump scored later that inning off a failed pickoff attempt.
The Bulldogs got on the board after trailing 5-0 in the fifth inning. Coming off Geedey's first allowed hit of the day, Briarcliffe scored with two outs on a throwing error by Ravel.
Bloomsburg tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh. Freshman
Brian Almand (Haddon Township, NJ/Paul VI) led off the inning with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored off a sacrifice fly by Mazza to give the Huskies a 6-1 lead.
Freshman
Sean McCloskey (Warminster/Archbishop Wood) threw 2.2 scoring innings in relief in his first collegiate outing. He allowed one hit while striking out three. Sophomore
Jared Schaffer (Perkasie/Pennridge) came in and pitched a perfect ninth inning.
Gavin Stewart picked up the loss for the Bulldogs. He pitched five innings and allowed five runs, three earned, with five strikeout and five walks.
The Huskies return to action later today as they face Lock Haven University in the nightcap of day two of the Builder Invitational at 6 p.m.
